Frequently asked questions
Common questions about Chevening Scholarships, eligibility, funding, and applications.
Yes. It is a full-funding master’s scholarship in the UK. It includes tuition support and major living and travel benefits. According to Oneir Raza, a Chevening scholar at the University of Cambridge, it “covered the university’s tuition fee, living expenses with a monthly stipend, air ticket, and visa fees.”
Chevening is a master’s scholarship in the United Kingdom with a one-year duration. That matches recipient experiences. Kulasinee Pipattanasookmongkol, who studied at the University of East Anglia, described it as “a fully funded scholarship from the UK government for one year of study.”
Applicants need to live in a Chevening-eligible country, complete an undergraduate degree before applying, have at least two years of work experience, and secure one unconditional offer from one of their three chosen universities. In practical terms, applicants should map their profile carefully against those criteria. As Nomfundo Elly Mavimbela advised, applicants should “tailor your application to highlight how you meet those requirements.”
Not necessarily for the scholarship itself. In her story, Ridha Shaukat Ali, a Chevening scholar at the University of Southampton, said Chevening “doesn’t require any standardized test.” However, she also explains that the universities you apply to may still ask for IELTS, GRE, or GMAT depending on the program, and in her case, the university required IELTS.
Applicants must receive one unconditional offer from one of their three chosen universities, so the scholarship and university admissions process go hand in hand. Ridha Shaukat Ali put it clearly: Chevening “requires you to apply to at least three universities.”
It is highly competitive, and recipient stories show that persistence matters. Hamza Waziri, who studied at the University of Sussex, said, “I applied for the Chevening Scholarship five times between 2017 and 2022.” At the same time, Zohra Jalal explains that selection is centered on “proven leadership, influence, and a commitment to creating positive change.”
The strongest applications on Global Scholarships stories are authentic, impact-driven, and clearly aligned with Chevening’s values. Nomfundo Elly Mavimbela advised applicants to “start early, stay organised, and be authentic.” Similarly, Kulasinee Pipattanasookmongkol said, “Chevening looks for potential changemakers, so focus on your impact and vision.”
