The Journey

Imaynalla! I’m Santiago Rocha from Bolivia. I grew up in Yotala, a small town, and it was precisely there, among dry landscapes and water-related challenges, that my vocation was born. Sometimes scarcity awakens passions... and in my case, it led me straight to hydrogeology.

Did you know that hydrogeology is a multidisciplinary field that not only studies groundwater, but also its relationship with chemistry, geology, and ecosystems? That is what I do, and I confess that I am fascinated by the invisible: that 30% of fresh water that flows beneath our feet, silently, strategically... and often ignored. Perhaps that is where the charm lies, isn’t it? In discovering what others do not see.

Between technical reports and fieldwork, I also make time to write microstories. With a little luck and fingers crossed, I may soon see my first children’s book published. In the meantime, I invite you to join this conversation about the proper management of groundwater... because what is essential, even if it is not always visible, deserves all our attention.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Government’s FCDO, which fully supports postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. Beyond the financial support, what truly mattered was the opportunity to highlight a topic I am deeply passionate about: the strategic importance of groundwater. I remember my interview being concise and direct, almost as clear as the message I wanted to convey. I spoke with conviction about why understanding and managing the water we do not see is essential for the future. In the end, I believe it was that combination of determination, purpose, and a touch of boldness that made the difference.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

No, I did not receive other scholarship offers. In fact, I faced several rejections along the way. However, that never discouraged me. If anything, it strengthened my determination; giving up has never really been my style.

Educational Background

I am a civil engineer by training, but one who was always drawn toward understanding groundwater. My academic background played a key role in shaping that direction, giving me both the technical foundation and the curiosity to specialize further.

A turning point came during my undergraduate thesis. I still remember a conversation with my supervisor: “Santiago, your topic is quite common, what if we explore groundwater as a solution to the shortage of drinking water?” That simple suggestion changed everything. When I hung up the call, I realized that beneath my feet there was not just soil, but an entire hidden resource waiting to be understood. From that moment on, I committed myself to the study of groundwater resources. What started as an academic decision quickly became a professional and personal calling.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I realized that studying abroad was possible when someone close to me received a scholarship to study in Germany, which motivated me to pursue the same path.

From then on, I prepared step by step, getting involved in academic and professional experiences that strengthened my CV. I focused on researching fully funded scholarships, as they were the most viable option for me. To meet language requirements, I took the TOEFL exam twice, improving my score through persistence and preparation.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

Seeking guidance was key to my preparation. I worked closely with two mentors who had previously been awarded scholarships, and their support helped me build confidence in the value of my work. I focused on clearly presenting my background, but more importantly, my future goals. I believe one of the most critical aspects is convincingly showing what you want to achieve, how you plan to do it, and who you aim to work with. Demonstrating that you are ready to put those plans into action, both during and after your studies, makes a strong impression on the selection panel.

How is Your Experience at the University of Strathclyde?

I sincerely thank the University of Strathclyde for the opportunity to study there. My experience was excellent and very rewarding.

How Do You Rate the University of Strathclyde Academically?

I would rate the institution 9 out of 10 academically. I do not give it a 10 because, as a hydrogeologist, I would have appreciated more field visits, as these were limited. However, the case studies and my thesis were fundamental to my training and professional development.

How Does the University of Strathclyde Support International Students?

10/10. The support for international students was excellent, and I was especially impressed that there are spaces available for Muslims to pray. The support for the queer community was also very enriching. I must also mention that Glaswegians are people bathed in honey, so sweet that I miss them every day.

What Did You Pursue After the Chevening Scholarship?

After my studies, I took some time off for vacations and travel, as I wanted to relax a bit. I am currently working for the Bolivian government at AAPS, the authority responsible for regulating drinking water and sanitation services. My role involves overseeing self-supply systems, mainly water wells, ensuring they are properly managed and operated according to optimal management guidelines.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What made my application stand out was my strong motivation to study water in a world where it is becoming increasingly valuable due to scarcity and growing demand. I believe my determination and passion for understanding, protecting, and valuing groundwater also strengthened my application.

Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?

If I were to go through the process again, I would have prepared by bringing data from my own country for my thesis research. Although I worked with data from a Scottish company for my thesis, I would have preferred to develop a more research-focused thesis centered on Bolivia. That said, I should also mention that my thesis is replicable in any country.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to anyone applying for a similar scholarship is to be determined and to clearly define what they want to achieve after the scholarship. If you are able to convince yourself of your short, medium-, and long-term goals, I am sure scholarship committees will also see your potential. In many cases, it is not only about having a perfect GPA or having worked on outstanding projects. What really matters is having a clear vision of how you will contribute in the future with the studies you pursue.
