The Journey

My name is Daniel Torralbas Socorro, and I am from Cuba. I am an economist and am currently pursuing an MSc in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management at Loughborough University London (2025-2026). I decided to pursue this postgraduate degree because my country faces severe economic restrictions, and part of the solution requires promoting the development of the private sector and innovation. I wanted to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and critical consulting skills to impact the sustainable development of my country, something for which there were no similar programs in Cuba.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

No, this was the first postgraduate scholarship I have ever applied for in my life.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Havana (2019). My background as an economist allowed me to become an Economic Policy Expert at the Ministry of Economy and Planning of Cuba, where I was part of the team that designed and implemented the first laws for MSMEs (micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises) in over 50 years. This foundation gave me the macroeconomic and technical vision necessary to understand the shortcomings of the private sector and directly prepared me to specialize in innovation and entrepreneurship management.

How Did You Find Information About Chevening Scholarship and Loughborough University London?

I confess that I already knew about the scholarship, but my interest in applying was sparked when two of my friends were selected for the 2024-2025 cohort. Knowing my background, they both believed I would have a good chance and encouraged me to apply. Additionally, after six intense years at the Ministry and then in private consulting, I was at a point in my life where I could put my career in Cuba on hold and spend a year studying abroad, so I took the opportunity to enhance my background. That is how I began my research on master's programs in the UK.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

Without a doubt, the best preparation resource was the Chevening website itself (https://www.chevening.org/), which has comprehensive and sufficient information to craft exceptional applications and increase the chances of success. The support of my two Chevener friends was fundamental. They both advised me on reviewing the essays, a critical step in the scholarship application, and gave me advice on choosing programs, what to expect from the British education system, and how to prepare for life in the UK. Overall, the support from other graduates of the Chevening community in Cuba was very helpful. I also had the opportunity to connect with Cheveners from previous cohorts on LinkedIn and other social networks, from whom I received valuable advice.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Loughborough University London?

First, I searched for Management programs across the UK that combined academic rigor with practical application, paying special attention to business schools holding the prestigious "Triple Crown" of accreditations (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS). Secondly, I opted for master's degrees in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, prioritizing those with a practical approach. Modules on consulting and entrepreneurial finance were priorities for me, as I wanted to learn how to address the real problems of businesses in environments with strong financial restrictions. Finally, I decided to choose universities based in London, given my preference for studying in a global city like the British capital.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

The impact and scale of my professional achievements. Having led the Cuban Government's first international cooperation project focused on MSMEs, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), allowed me to demonstrate real leadership by training more than 400 entrepreneurs across four Cuban provinces. Additionally, my career plan was directly aligned with the development needs of my country and the priorities of the British Embassy in Havana, providing a realistic and necessary vision. Truly, having a professional track record with demonstrable and real achievements is a great help to any applicant.

How is Your Experience at Loughborough University London?

The experience at the London campus of Loughborough University is exceptional. It is a highly prestigious university with one of the highest student satisfaction scores in the entire country. The academic rigor of the professors and the studies are pillars in the solid preparation of its graduates. Furthermore, being in London allowed me to get to know the city, visit beautiful places, expand my network, make new friends, and build memories for a lifetime.

What Did You Pursue After the Chevening Scholarship?

At the time of writing (late August 2026), I am two weeks away from submitting my dissertation and concluding this wonderful academic stage. When I return to Cuba, with an international master's degree and a year of intense learning, I will resume my career as an economist, analyst, and consultant.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have started the essay writing process much earlier. Although I achieved the goal, having more time for multiple revisions and to receive external feedback always helps to refine the narrative of the application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Be extremely specific. Chevening is looking for leaders, so do not just describe the duties of the position you held; demonstrate with concrete examples and clear metrics how you led teams or positively influenced other people. Also, make sure that your career plan responds to a real problem in your country, and explain exactly how the chosen master's degree will give you the precise tools to solve it.
