The Journey
Hello, my name is Gerald Kutosi Namboko from Uganda, East Africa. Professionally, I am a Pharmaceutical Scientist, and that is the line of career I am pursuing. I pursued a Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I am also passionate about mentorship, especially for scholars applying for scholarships to pursue further studies, and also for young students in high schools in Uganda to offer career guidance to them.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I am a recipient of the 2023-2024 Chevening Scholarship, and I pursued my master's from the University of South Wales in the United Kingdom for a year. The Scholarship is a fully funded one and amounts to 50,000GBP for the entire period of study
Educational Background
I did a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences for my undergraduate studies. This background was key in positioning me to both work in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry and apply for my Master's later in the UK.
How Did You Find Information About the Chevening Scholarship and the University of South Wales?
Information on the scholarships was readily available when I searched the internet. One just needs to know exactly what they are looking for, e.g., the master's program, preferred country of study, the duration for which they want to study, etc. It helps one narrow down their search options when trying to find a suitable scholarship for them.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I didn’t take any. I applied for a waiver for the IELTS test, which my university granted based on my previous high school English grades.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
Applying for a scholarship requires rigorous preparation, especially for such a competitive scholarship as Chevening. A lot of background research on the application process, the eligibility criteria, the interview process, and requirements was done. I also reached out to previous scholars for guidance throughout the application period, in addition to watching many videos online from other scholars.
How is Your Experience at the University of South Wales?
Generally, the institution was welcoming and accommodating, especially for international scholars, with many activities organized to engage the students.
How Do You Rate the University of South Wales Academically?
I would consider it excellent. Generally accredited Higher Education Institutions in the UK offer world-class education. You are confident in learning about the latest changes and advances in your field of study, taught by expert lecturers.
How Does the University of South Wales Support International Students?
There is a lot of guidance offered and welcoming events for international students. A dedicated office exists to handle international student affairs. Engaging events are set up for the students to keep them active throughout their period of study.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or the Country's Native Language?
English, since I studied in the UK.
What Did You Pursue After the Chevening Scholarship?
Presently, I am engaged in work where I am actually practicing what I studied while getting further industry experience.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I would say authenticity and specificity on what and why exactly I wanted to study. My story drew inspiration from the actual situations in my country, and my proposed solutions were very practical and realistic. I knew exactly how my course of choice fit into my career plan.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I think with the current level of competition and application quality, I would be more specific and also relate my career plan and goals to the global happenings and interests at the moment, for me to stand out
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I still stress the authenticity of the story. Let it be realistic and applicable to the situation in your context. Show how your overall career plan fits with solving the global challenges currently being faced
