The Journey
My name is Natisha Mokutnauth, and I am a physiotherapist and strength and conditioning coach from Guyana. My professional journey has been shaped by my passion for sport and my commitment to helping athletes perform at their best while staying healthy. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with elite athletes, including serving as a physiotherapist for Guyana’s national football teams, where I support players through injury management, rehabilitation, and performance development.
Working in elite sport exposed me to both the incredible potential of our athletes and the challenges we face in developing high-performance systems in small sporting nations. These experiences inspired me to pursue further education in Strength and Conditioning, so that I could deepen my knowledge in performance science and contribute more meaningfully to athlete development in Guyana and the Caribbean.
For me, pursuing postgraduate education was never just about earning another degree—it was about gaining the tools to help transform how we support athletes at home.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship, a prestigious global scholarship funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Through this scholarship, I pursued a Master of Science (MSc) in Strength and Conditioning at the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom, as part of the 2024/25 Chevening cohort.
The Chevening Scholarship is a fully funded program, covering tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, and visa fees. However, beyond the financial support, the most powerful part of the scholarship is the global network of leaders and changemakers it brings together.
Being part of the Chevening community meant learning alongside individuals from around the world who are all committed to creating positive impact in their respective countries.
Educational Background
I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Guyana, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Rehabilitation (Physiotherapy).
My training provided a strong foundation in human anatomy, biomechanics, injury rehabilitation, and exercise prescription. After graduating, I began working with athletes across several sports, which deepened my understanding of how closely rehabilitation and performance are connected.
I quickly realized that physiotherapy alone was only one piece of the puzzle. To truly support athletes in reaching their full potential, it is essential to integrate strength and conditioning, performance science, and injury prevention strategies.
This realization ultimately motivated me to pursue postgraduate study in Strength and Conditioning, allowing me to bridge the gap between rehabilitation and performance optimization.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to University of Greenwich?
How Did You Find Information About Chevening Scholarship/University of Greenwich?
I first learned about the Chevening Scholarship through online research and conversations with professionals in my network. As I began exploring the opportunity, I became increasingly inspired by its emphasis on leadership, global collaboration, and national development.
When researching universities, I looked for programs that combined strong academic research with applied performance science. The University of Greenwich stood out because of its practical approach to strength and conditioning, including hands-on athlete testing and exposure to modern sports performance technologies.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
No. Because Guyana is an English-speaking country, and my undergraduate education was conducted entirely in English, I was not required to complete an English language proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL.
My academic transcripts already demonstrated my proficiency in English through my coursework and academic performance.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
Preparing for the Chevening Scholarship required more than just submitting an application—it required reflecting deeply on my leadership journey, career path, and long-term vision.
The application essays focus heavily on leadership, networking, and future impact, so I spent time carefully articulating how my experiences working with athletes and national teams shaped my goals. I wanted to demonstrate not only what I had already achieved, but also how the knowledge and networks gained through the scholarship would allow me to contribute meaningfully to sports development in Guyana.
The process encouraged me to think bigger about my role—not just as a practitioner, but as someone who could contribute to building stronger high-performance systems for athletes in my country.
How Is (was) Your Experience at University of Greenwich?
My experience at the University of Greenwich was both academically challenging and professionally enriching.
The program combined scientific theory with practical application, allowing students to engage with real-world athlete testing and performance monitoring tools such as force plates, sprint timing systems, and other sports science technologies.
This hands-on experience provided invaluable insight into how evidence-based performance systems operate in elite sporting environments.
How Do You Rate University of Greenwich Academically and Why?
Academically, the program provided a strong balance between research, critical thinking, and practical application. The lecturers brought a wealth of experience from both academic research and professional sport environments, which enriched the learning experience.
The program encouraged students to challenge ideas, evaluate scientific evidence, and apply research findings to real-world training and rehabilitation contexts.
How Does University of Greenwich Support International Students?
The University of Greenwich provides strong support for international students through academic guidance, student services, and community-building initiatives.
Additionally, being part of the Chevening network meant access to numerous leadership events, professional development opportunities, and a global community of scholars from diverse backgrounds.
This network became one of the most valuable aspects of the experience.
What Did You Pursue After the Scholarship?
After completing my MSc, I returned to Guyana, where I continue working in sports medicine and athletic performance. My work focuses on supporting athletes through physiotherapy, injury prevention, and strength and conditioning, while also contributing to broader conversations about improving high-performance sport systems within the country.
Since returning home, one of the most exciting projects I have launched is the Insync Therapeutics Speed Camp, a high-performance training initiative designed to help footballers develop speed as a trainable skill. The camp brings together evidence-based strength and conditioning methods, sprint mechanics training, and performance testing to help athletes better understand how speed, power, and force production influence their performance on the field.
The knowledge and experience I gained during my MSc in Strength and Conditioning at the University of Greenwich played a major role in shaping this project. Through my studies, I was exposed to modern performance testing technologies, athlete monitoring systems, and scientific approaches to speed development. Being able to bring these concepts back to Guyana and apply them in a practical setting has been incredibly rewarding.
The Speed Camp is only one step toward a larger vision—creating environments where athletes in Guyana and the Caribbean have access to the same level of performance support, sports science knowledge, and development opportunities that exist in leading sporting nations.
My long-term goal is to continue building programs and systems that help athletes train smarter, perform better, and stay healthier throughout their careers, while also contributing to the growth of high-performance sport in the region.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it told a clear and authentic story.
Rather than focusing only on academic achievements, I emphasized my professional journey working with athletes, the challenges faced within developing sporting systems, and my vision for creating change.
Having a clear connection between my past experiences, the degree I pursued, and the impact I hope to create in Guyana helped demonstrate that this opportunity would be used to drive meaningful progress.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were applying again, I would begin preparing earlier in the process.
Scholarship applications require time for reflection, research, and careful storytelling. Starting early allows applicants to refine their essays and clearly communicate their goals.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
