The Deutschlandstipendium is a national public-private partnership scholarship programme established in 2011 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, now BMFTR). It supports talented and high-achieving students at state and state-recognised universities in Germany. The scholarship is open to students of all nationalities and is awarded regardless of the student’s or their parents’ income. Half of the funding comes from the Federal Government, and the other half from private donors such as businesses, foundations, or individuals. Selection is carried out by the universities themselves, which set their own admission criteria and application deadlines. In addition to academic achievement, social commitment and personal accomplishments, including the successful overcoming of obstacles in a student’s educational biography, are taken into account. Scholarship funds do not count towards BAföG grants, and no social insurance contributions are payable on the amount received.
