Stony Brook University was started in 1957. It was initially known as State University on the Long Island between 1957-1962. The university was built with the purpose of training teachers for secondary schools. The school began its first academic session with 148 students in 1957 at its first campus in Oyster Bay. The acceptance rate at Stony Brook University is relatively low. During the previous admission exercise, 38,000 freshmen applied for admission in the school, but only 18,000 students were offered admission, representing an approximately 42% acceptance rate at Stony Brook University. It is estimated that 3,400 commenced academic sessions out of those offered admission, dropping the enrolment rate to 21% of students offered admission. Also, for the admission, the GPA range of students admitted was between 3.6-4 in a 4.0 grading system. The SAT range of students at the school is between 1260-1410, while the average for a newly admitted student was 1330. Almost all the students admitted finished among the best students in their class.
The school fees for students from the state also differ and it goes a long way in determining the admission and acceptance rate. Students from New York pay $5,870 while students from other states pay $17,810.
