If you think of Australia, koalas and kangaroos might be the first things that come to mind, but for international students, Australia is also a popular study destination.

British settlement in Australia began in 1788, and English is the national language today. For international students, this means that most Australian university courses require proof of English proficiency before admission.

To set a standard for incoming international students, many universities in Australia have minimum score requirements for English proficiency tests such as the IELTS. In today’s guide, we will look at 11 universities in Australia that may accept IELTS 6.0 for at least some courses. In this article, IELTS 6.0 means the overall band score unless individual band requirements are stated.

Let’s dive straight into our list of universities in Australia that accept an overall IELTS score of 6.0 for some courses. Please keep in mind that many universities have higher IELTS requirements for specific programs, especially in health, education, law, psychology, social work, nursing, midwifery, and postgraduate study.

For standard undergraduate coursework, the University of Tasmania lists IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no individual band below 5.5. For standard postgraduate coursework, it lists IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no individual band below 6.0. 3. University of New England

Established as a college of the University of Sydney in 1938, the University of New England is an Australian university based in Armidale, New South Wales. UNE offers study options for both on-campus and online students.

UNE accepts IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no sub-band below 5.5 as a standard English language test score. However, some degrees have higher requirements. For example, courses in law, nursing, pharmacy, social work, education, and higher degrees by research may require IELTS scores above 6.0. UniSQ’s current English language page lists Academic IELTS 6.5 or better overall with no subscore below 6.0 as accepted evidence for the majority of UniSQ degrees, with exceptions for the Bachelor of Nursing and other specified degrees. FAQs: IELTS Acceptance in Australia

Is an Overall Band Score of 6.0 Good Enough to Study in Australia?

For some universities and some courses, an overall IELTS band score of 6.0 is enough to meet the minimum English requirement. This is especially common for standard undergraduate courses at certain universities.

However, many programs require higher scores, especially in fields such as medicine, nursing, midwifery, education, social work, psychology, law, allied health, and postgraduate research. These courses often require IELTS 6.5, 7.0, or 7.5, and they may also require minimum scores in each individual band.

Before applying, check both the university’s general English language page and the individual course page. The course page is usually the most important source because course-specific requirements can be higher than the university minimum.

What is the Lowest IELTS Score that Passes the Standards of Australian Universities?

For direct entry to many Australian university degree programs, the lower end of the IELTS requirement is usually around 6.0 overall, often with minimum individual band scores. Many postgraduate and professionally accredited programs require 6.5 or higher.

Some foundation, diploma, TAFE, and pathway programs may accept lower IELTS scores such as 5.5, but those options are not the same as direct entry to every bachelor’s or master’s degree. Many Australian universities also offer English language or pathway programs for students who do not yet meet the direct-entry English requirement.
