Steps on Applying for an Austrian Student Visa

There may be slight variations in the guidelines to be able to get an Austrian student visa depending on special circumstances or the requirements of the Austrian embassy in your home country. However, here are the general guidelines for applying for a student visa in Austria.

Step 1. Research and Apply to a Study Program

Start by thoroughly searching for a study program that best meets your career aspirations and academic goals. Other factors to be considered include the reputation of institutions, the curricula of programs, research and internship opportunities, campus facilities, faculty, and admissions deadlines. Additionally, make sure your selected program is recognized by authorities in Austria to avoid issues during your application procedure.

Step 2. Gather the Necessary Documents

After you have decided on your study program, prepare the required documents for visa application. When getting an Austrian student visa, also known as a Residence Permit – Student, you must provide the necessary documents.

GENERAL DOCUMENTS
  • completed visa application form
  • valid passport
  • acceptance letter from your University in Austria
  • valid health insurance
  • accommodation preparations
  • proof of financial stability
  • comprehensive travel itinerary

Additionally, check with the Austrian consulate or embassy in your home country or official Austrian websites for any additional requirements that may be specific to your home country.

Step 3. Schedule an Appointment

After compiling the required documents for your visa application, you must complete and submit your application to the Austrian representative authority in your home country. That would either be a consulate with the power to issue a visa or the Austrian embassy in your country. Some embassies may require that you schedule an appointment. Make an appointment well in advance as the visa application process can be time-consuming and can take several weeks or even months.

Step 4. Submit Your Application

Visit the consulate or embassy on the day of your appointment, and submit your visa application. Ensure that the information provided is accurate and all required documents are submitted.

You should also pay the application fee, the total visa issuance fee for a student visa in Austria will cost EUR 160. This includes an application submission fee of EUR 120, a fee of EUR 20 when the visa is granted, and another fee of EUR 20 for collecting police identification data.

However, there may be other additional expenses, such as a fee for foreign civil status documents like a marriage certificate or birth certificate. Additionally, in the occasion that your visa is rejected, your application fee of EUR 120 will not be refunded.

Step 5. Wait for Processing

Once the application is submitted, it is reviewed and processed by the consulate or embassy. The processing time will vary depending on various factors, including the embassy’s workload. It is therefore crucial that your visa application is sent in well ahead of your intended travel date. Additionally, it is also advised that any non-refundable travel preparations are not made before the visa decision is received.

Step 6. Attend an Interview (If Required)

Your application process may involve an interview, in which case you must be well prepared. Review your academic plans and practice articulating your future aspirations, academic background, and motivation for pursuing an education in Austria. Ensure that you are punctual and dressed professionally for the interview.

Step 7. Receive Your Visa Decision

You will be informed of the visa decision once your application has been processed. You will be able to travel to Austria and go about your studies if approved.

In case the visa application is rejected, you may be able to apply again with supporting documents or appeal the decision. Ensure that you review the reasons for rejection, and consider requesting assistance from the consulate of the embassy.

International students interested in pursuing an education in Austria must get a student visa before they are allowed to travel to the country.
