The Journey

Hi, I'm Zeen Naeem from the Maldives, and I'm a Chevening Scholar for the 2023/2024 academic year. I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in Evidence-based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation at the University of Oxford. My work focuses on violence prevention and response, and this degree allows me to explore how research and policy can work together to create more effective solutions. I’m particularly interested in using research methods to answer critical questions like what works, for whom, and under what circumstances, ensuring that policies are evidence-based and impactful in addressing issues like violence and inequality.

Chevening Scholarship Details

The Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK government, is awarded to individuals who demonstrate the potential to become future leaders and decision-makers in their countries. It is a fully funded scholarship open to applicants from over 160 countries and territories. You can find the eligibility details on the Chevening website. Some of the main requirements are having at least two years of work experience and an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a master’s program in the UK.

The scholarship covers tuition fees, flights, visa costs, and a monthly stipend to support living expenses. Throughout the year, Chevening also organizes events that provide opportunities to connect with fellow scholars and build a global network.

Educational Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Bath. While my academic background likely helped me secure a place in my master’s program, I believe it was my work experience that truly strengthened my Chevening Scholarship application. Working with the government in the Maldives, I was able to demonstrate leadership and network building—key elements I highlighted to show why I was a strong fit for the scholarship.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarships and the University of Oxford?

I gathered most of my information from the official Chevening website, which provides a detailed timeline of the application process, including deadlines for essay submission, reference letters, and securing university offers. My focus was on preparing the four required essays: Leadership and Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and Career Plans.

I primarily relied on online resources from Chevening alumni, who shared helpful tips on structuring essays using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). This approach helped me focus on three to four well-developed examples that demonstrated my leadership and networking skills, ensuring both depth and clarity in my responses.

Additionally, I aligned my goals with the UK government's priorities and existing projects in my country, demonstrating how I could contribute to ongoing initiatives. After completing my scholarship application, I focused on applying to university programs, as they each have their own deadlines. I had also spoken to previous Chevening alumni from my country to get their perspectives and insights into the scholarship process.

For the scholarship interview, I took a similar approach as with the essays. I ensured I had thorough knowledge of the programs I wanted to pursue, the potential impact of completing them, and concrete examples of my leadership and networking skills, which are core focuses of the Chevening Scholarship.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I wouldn’t change much. I had plenty of time to prepare my application and research my university choices. I knew for a while that I wanted to apply, but I first focused on gaining the necessary work experience to meet the eligibility criteria, which ultimately helped me feel confident in my application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start developing your leadership and networking skills well before you apply. Be proactive in your work and community involvement, whether through a job or volunteering, to demonstrate real competence and impact. Preparation starts long before the application process and having strong examples from your past will give you a solid foundation to stand out. Once you begin applying, focus on articulating these experiences effectively in your essays. Give yourself plenty of time to refine them and take advantage of online resources. You can also reach out to Chevening alumni for advice but be sure to do your research first.

Best of luck with your academic journey and the scholarship process
