The Journey
I am Andualem Endrias Yesuf, an MD and MSc Epidemiology candidate. I am a leader and clinical researcher with a strong interest in evidence-based practice, particularly in the fields of neurology and clinical trials. This passion led me to pursue advanced studies in Epidemiology in the UK. I am also actively involved in volunteer activities and serve as an advocate for mental health.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I am a recipient of the Chevening Award, one of the world’s most prestigious scholarships. Chevening enables outstanding emerging leaders from across the globe to pursue one-year master’s degrees in the United Kingdom. The scholarship is fully funded, covering all expenses, including tuition fees, living costs, and return airfare to and from the recipient’s home country.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
I have also been offered multiple competitive scholarships, including the Think Big Scholarship (£6000) at the University of Bristol (UK), which provided partial funding, a 40% scholarship from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a $60,000 scholarship offer from Washington University in St. Louis.
Educational Background
I received my Doctor of Medicine degree from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2022. During my time in medical school, I found great fulfilment in treating and caring for individual patients. However, I realized that clinical practice alone did not fully address the broader health challenges faced by communities in developing countries like Ethiopia. This insight led me to pursue a career in public health and healthcare leadership, with a focus on disease prevention, evidence-based practice, and the modernization of health systems.
How Did You Find Information About the Chevening Scholarship and the University of Bristol?
I have been preparing to apply for several highly competitive scholarships in North America and the United Kingdom, including Chevening, the McDonnell Scholarship, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health dual MPH/MBA program. To ensure readiness, I completed all required documents, including my IELTS certificate, well in advance of the application period.
I systematically reviewed scholarship requirements and deadlines, consulted previous scholars, and organized all relevant information into structured folders. I then developed a comprehensive personal statement reflecting my background and future aspirations and prepared my CV using the Europass format. This preparation process took approximately six months, after which applying to multiple scholarships became significantly more efficient.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
As part of my scholarship application preparation, I took the IELTS test, as most institutions require proof of English language proficiency, which also broadens the range of eligible applications. I later learned that some universities in the United States and the United Kingdom may waive the IELTS requirement based on prior education in English-medium institutions or through interviews, which is an encouraging option for future applicants when taking the test is not feasible.
In terms of preparation, I dedicated approximately two months to IELTS study while working as a clinician. I relied on well-structured online resources, including YouTube lessons and mock examinations, which were instrumental in my preparation.
How is Your Experience at the University of Bristol?
I have truly had an amazing experience studying at the University of Bristol. It has been enriching to learn alongside students from diverse backgrounds and different parts of the world. The University of Bristol is a large and vibrant institution, and I have also been involved in voluntary leadership activities within Bristol Medical School. The university offers numerous events each month, including postgraduate trips to various cities across the UK, cultural festivals, and valuable networking opportunities. The campus is very walkable, which contributes to a welcoming and homely atmosphere. As the MSc programme is intensive, there is often limited time to explore beyond academic commitments. However, this is a common feature of one-year MSc programmes in the UK, where a significant amount of learning is condensed into a short period. Overall, I enjoyed it.
How Do You Rate the University of Bristol Academically?
Bristol Medical School at the University of Bristol trains future healthcare leaders to address pressing global health challenges through an advanced understanding of the economic, policy, and cultural determinants of health. The programme also emphasizes the translation of epidemiological and public health evidence into effective policy and practice. In addition, the school is supported by a strong research infrastructure and is part of the Russell Group, a prestigious association of UK universities recognized for research-led teaching, academic excellence, and global impact.
The University is home to highly influential researchers across multiple disciplines. One area that particularly impressed me is the Evidence Synthesis Group, led by Professor Julian Higgins, who is also my supervisor. I am proud to have the opportunity to learn under his guidance. I have also explored several landmark research initiatives, including the ProtecT Trial (Prostate Testing for Cancer and Treatment), a long-term study evaluating treatments for localized prostate cancer; the world-renowned “Children of the 90s” study (ALSPAC); and the development of the world’s first 3D radar breast imaging system designed for faster and safer screening.
These and many other ongoing projects reflect the School’s strong commitment to impactful research. I would therefore highly recommend the Population Health pathway for future students, as it is well-structured, well-resourced, and academically enriching.
How Does the University of Bristol Support International Students?
The University of Bristol supports its international student community, which includes over 8,000 students from more than 150 countries, through a range of dedicated services. These include specialized visa and immigration support, academic language development resources, and competitive scholarship opportunities such as the Think Big Programme.
In addition, the University provides comprehensive pastoral care through services such as Wellbeing Access, 24-hour residential support, and targeted counselling services, including support for ethnic minority students. These resources contribute to a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes student well-being and academic success.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out for several key reasons. Firstly, I demonstrated a strong passion for my field and a clearly defined career goal. Secondly, I have gained substantial leadership experience and developed strong networking skills through various academic and professional engagements. Thirdly, I have a solid academic background complemented by relevant clinical and work experience. Lastly, and most importantly, I was able to clearly and confidently communicate my achievements, experiences, and aspirations, both in written essays and during interviews.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I would advise future applicants to first believe in themselves and build confidence that securing such a scholarship is achievable with the right preparation and effort. It is important to carefully review the official scholarship website to fully understand the requirements and selection criteria.
In addition, I recommend that applicants actively learn from past scholars by engaging with their experiences on platforms such as LinkedIn, YouTube, and other social media channels, and by directly reaching out to alumni where possible. Applicants should also clearly define and organize their career goals, while maintaining strong passion, determination, and persistence throughout the application process.
I also live by the quote from Denzel Washington: “Without commitment, you’ll never start. But more importantly, without consistency, you’ll never finish,” which continues to guide my approach to long-term goals and challenges. And GOOD LUCK!
