The Journey

Hello, I am Lameya! I am from Jashore, a small city in Bangladesh, and I am currently roaming around Europe in an exciting academic journey. I am pursuing my Master’s in Engineering of Data-Intensive Intelligent Software Systems (EDISS) through the prestigious Erasmus Mundus program.

As part of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Degree on the Engineering of Data-Intensive Intelligent Software Systems (EDISS), my academic journey has taken me across multiple countries. The program is jointly offered by four universities across four countries. I completed my first two semesters at the host institution, Åbo Akademi University, Finland. Currently, I am in my third semester at the University of LAquila, Italy. The other partner universities include Mälardalen University, Sweden, and the University of the Balearic Islands, Spain. This multi-country experience has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in diverse academic environments, explore different research perspectives, and gain hands-on experience in the field of AI and Software Engineering.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) in Software Engineering with a major in Data Science at Daffodil International University, Bangladesh. My undergraduate studies were broad, covering everything from web development to data science. Alongside my coursework, I was actively involved in organizing workshops, summits, and international conferences, as well as other extracurricular activities.

Before completing my undergraduate degree, I gained hands-on experience as a Data Science Intern from industry. During this period, I also conducted other research work that resulted in a conference publication.

After graduating, I worked as a Lecturer in the Computer Science & Engineering Department, where I strengthened my teaching and mentoring skills. As an advisor to the Girls’ Computer Programming Club, I also supported and guided young women pursuing careers in STEM fields.

These experiences collectively prepared me for a multi-country academic environment. Organizing international events helped me work confidently with people from different cultures. My internship and research taught me to adapt to new teams and problem-solving styles, while teaching strengthened my communication and collaboration skills. Altogether, these experiences built the flexibility and global mindset needed to thrive in an Erasmus Mundus program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?

Throughout my undergraduate studies, I maintained a strong academic record while engaging in technical activities that helped me grow beyond the classroom. From early on, I was determined to pursue higher studies abroad with a scholarship, so I prepared strategically and focused on building experiences that genuinely supported that goal.

When it came to scholarships, my priority was always Erasmus Mundus. The program is highly prestigious, the funding is generous and transparent, and the opportunity to study across multiple countries with a joint Master’s degree is something very few scholarships can match. The cultural exposure, academic quality, and mobility structure made it stand out far more than the alternatives.

With this focus, I concentrated my applications on Erasmus Mundus programs, applying to two Erasmus Mundus tracks and one Master’s program at the University of Turku. Rather than applying broadly, I applied strategically. By the time of application, I had developed a balanced profile combining academic performance, relevant project work, and early industry experience. I ensured that my motivation letters clearly connected my background with each program’s objectives, demonstrating not only interest but a coherent long-term vision.

The competition is intense, with only 24 candidates selected from over 500 applicants, but what helped my application stand out was its clarity and consistency. It presented a well-prepared profile, strong alignment with the program, and a clear narrative linking my academic journey to my future goals.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

Yes. Fully Funded Scholarship for MSc in ICT: Data Analytics at the University of Turku, Finland

Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?

I am enrolled in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Engineering of DataIntensive Intelligent Software Systems (EDISS) program. The program focuses on the engineering of large-scale, data-intensive, and intelligent software systems, combining Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering. It places strong emphasis on bridging the gap between AI and Software Engineering.

How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?

My first year of study was in Finland, while my second year is currently in Italy. Based on this experience, the cost of living in Nordic countries is generally higher than in Southern or Central Europe. Finland was noticeably more expensive, particularly in terms of housing and daily expenses, whereas Italy has been relatively more affordable overall.

That said, the Erasmus Mundus scholarship provides generous financial support, which is sufficient to comfortably cover living expenses in both countries. As a result, financial management is not a major challenge, and I have been able to focus fully on my academic and research activities rather than on cost-related concerns.

Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change from One Country to Another?

The language of instruction in my studies has consistently been English in all universities, so I did not face any academic language barriers. In Finland, English is widely spoken, which makes everyday communication straightforward.

But In Italy, daily communication in English can be a bit challenging. However, my curriculum includes an Italian A1 course, which has helped me to develop basic proficiency and handle everyday “survival” conversations. As a result, I have not encountered any significant language barriers during my time in either country.

Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others? What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering This Scholarship?

Yes, I would strongly recommend the Erasmus Mundus program to students seeking high-quality education, international exposure, and academic growth.

My advice to prospective applicants:

  • Start preparing early
  • Research the program thoroughly
  • Be honest and specific in your motivation letter
  • Clearly explain how your background aligns with the program

You have to set your goal during your undergraduate studies to make your profile better and more selective. And most importantly, be consistent and optimistic throughout the process.

Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?

Looking back on my Erasmus journey so far, I am incredibly grateful for the experience, knowledge, and friendship I gained. The experience has been transformative for both my academic and personal growth.

However, if I were to do something differently, I guess I would be more open to trying new activities and engaging in experiences beyond my usual academic focus and daily routine.
