The Journey

Hi everyone, my name is Khadijah Saeed, and I’m from Pakistan. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s in Development and Governance at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. I was awarded the prestigious DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship, which supports future leaders in public policy and good governance. Before this, I worked in the international development sector for about three years and received my undergraduate degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. I have always been drawn to the intersection of policy and governance. My academic background, coupled with field experience, naturally led me to focus on governance within international development.

DAAD Scholarship Details

The scholarship is fully funded, it covers tuition, health insurance, rent, and provides a monthly stipend of 992 euros. I also reached the final selection stage of the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Public Policy (MAPP).

Educational Background

I received my undergraduate degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from National Defence University, Islamabad, in 2022, graduating with a CGPA of 3.76. My coursework covered a range of themes, including conflict resolution and international law. This gave me a solid foundation to understand and work on key issues in development, especially those related to policy and governance.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Duisburg-Essen?

I began by doing thorough research. I looked into course content, career prospects, and how each program matched my background and goals. I took the IELTS Academic test and scored 8.0 overall. I just focused on learning the test format and practicing. It’s more about smart preparation than anything else.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

First, I made sure all my documents were ready: transcripts, degree certificates, and official attestations. I also spoke to my professors and mentors early so they had time to write solid recommendation letters. For the Helmut Schmidt Scholarship, the requirements were straightforward: a motivation letter, an academic CV, proof of work experience, all your degrees, and the DAAD form. One tip from my side would be to pay close attention to the details. Germany is big on paperwork, and even a tiny mistake like a missing date or signature can affect your application.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

What made my application stand out was how harmonious and consistent it was. I knew exactly what policy area I wanted to work on: climate adaptation in Pakistan, especially the climate-migration nexus, and I made sure that stayed at the center of everything. My academic and professional experiences all supported my focus.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start as early as possible. Your motivation letter will take a few drafts. Know the program well, understand the requirements and make sure your documents reflect that clearly. Talk to alumni and your mentors to get any guidance needed.
