The Journey

Ekejiuba Emeka is from Awor-Oraifite in Anambra State, Nigeria. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown, facing financial challenges early in life. Despite these difficulties, he remained committed to his education, supporting himself through small jobs to pay school fees.

After secondary school, he was encouraged to pursue an apprenticeship due to financial constraints, but he chose to continue his education. His determination led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, driven by a strong interest in environmental and biological sciences.

DAAD EPOS Scholarship Details

Emeka began applying for scholarships in 2019, submitting applications to multiple programs, including Chevening, Erasmus Mundus, Commonwealth Shared, and Stipendium Hungaricum. Although he received several rejections in 2020, he remained persistent.

He was initially awarded the Talented Young Scientist of Nigeria (TYSON) scholarship and the University of Sheffield International Merit Award, but could not proceed due to COVID-19 disruptions and funding limitations.

In 2020, he reapplied more strategically to fewer, well-aligned programs. This led to his selection for the DAAD EPOS Scholarship to pursue a Master's degree in Phytomedicine (Environmental Protection and Sustainability) at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes. He was also awarded:

  • Gadjah Mada Fellowship
  • Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarship

Educational Background

In 2014, Emeka gained admission to study Zoology (specializing in Entomology) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nigeria.

To support himself financially, he worked in construction during weekends and later became a tutor in Biology and Chemistry at a tutorial center. Despite these challenges, he graduated with a First-Class Honours (GPA: 4.7/5.0), ranking as the best student in his department, specialty, and faculty. His strong academic performance and research experience in environmental entomology provided a solid foundation for his Master's program and scholarship applications.
