Honduras is a small Central American country known for its abundance of mineral resources, coffee, and tropical fruits. In terms of tuition, most Honduran universities are quite cheap by global standards. However, if you want to pursue higher education in this country, you’ve got to have a good command of Spanish. With Spanish being the official language, there’s hardly any university here that offers programs in English. Is University Free in Honduras?

Education is generally very affordable in Honduras with tuition fees going for less than USD 1000 per academic year in public schools. However, if you plan to attend a private institution, then prepare with about USD 1500 to USD 9000 per academic year in tuition fees.

What Months is the School Year in Honduras?

School in Honduras runs from August to June for a full academic year. Since the country is located in Central America, the calendar allows some of the holidays on the U.S. calendar in addition to the official Honduras holidays. Classes typically run from 7.00 am to 2.00 pm, taking around 40 minutes per session. The dry period runs from November to April in the interior highlands and the Pacific Coast regions, while winter runs from May to October.

Cheapest Universities in Honduras

1. Panamerican Agricultural University

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 13,200

The Panamerican Agricultural University, or simply Zamorano, is a private university situated in the Yeguare valley, roughly 20 miles away from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. When it began its journey in 1942, it only had 140 students. But today, 1,200-plus students are enrolled here, with 95 academic staff employed to teach them. More than 20 countries are represented at the campus, which spans over 10,113 acres of land. So far, this university has produced over 8,000 graduates hailing from 29 countries.

At this cheap university in Honduras, students get to pick from four bachelor’s majors: Agricultural Sciences and Production; Food Science and Technology; Environment and Development; and Agribusiness Management. Additionally, it offers a master’s program in Sustainable Tropical Agriculture. Although the tuitions here are higher than that in most other Honduran universities, the good news for prospective students is that this university offers scholarships to students from different countries that cover either partial tuition or full tuition.   

2. Universidad Metropolitana de Honduras

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 5,000

Universidad Metropolitana de Honduras (UMH) is a non-profit private university that came into being in 2002. Its main campus is positioned at a distance of 3.5 miles from downtown Tegucigalpa. It also has satellite campuses in several other locations, including San Pedro Sula, Choluteca, Gracias, Tocoa, and Juticalpa. The university has a student population north of 3,000.

UMH facilitates six bachelor’s programs: Business Engineering; Management and Social Development; Ecotourism; Management and Business Accounting; Social and Public Communication; and Marketing and International Business. The master’s programs available here are Tourism and Integral Management for Disaster Risk Reduction; Economy and Finance; Strategic Marketing; Social Management; and Business Management. 3. Universidad Catolica de Honduras

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 1,000

Universidad Catolica de Honduras (UNICAH) is a private Catholic university that operates through 11 campuses through Honduras. Three of these campuses are located in Tegucigalpa, and the remaining eight are placed in La Ceiba, Juticalpa, Siguatepeque, Olanchito, San Pedro Sula, Danli, Choluteca, and Santa Rosa de Copan. The non-profit university, which has been around since 1993, has produced more than 22,500 graduates to date. The total enrollment at this cheap university in Honduras currently stands at over 19,000, while the number of academic staff exceeds 1,000.

AT UNICAH, 30 academic programs are offered in five disciplines: Engineering, Medicine, Administration, Social Sciences, and Theology. Of them, 16 are undergraduate programs and 14 are postgraduate programs. This university offers scholarships to its meritorious students, as well as the students with low economic resources. More than 6,000 students receive scholarships each year.

4. Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 1,500

Originally named Instituto Superior Tecnológico, Universidad Tecnológica de Honduras (UTH) was established in 1986, with its main campus sited in San Pedro Sula. It has nine other campuses in La Ceiba, Tegucigalpa, El Progreso, Puerto Cortes, Santa Barbara, Choloma, Choluteca, Siguatepeque, and Bay Islands. This private university too has a student population of over 19,000, while its teaching body includes 700-plus professors.

UTH offers 11 bachelor’s programs, four of which are in the field of Engineering. Six master’s programs and a doctorate program are also available here. No scholarships are apparently offered at this university. But of course, that shouldn’t be much of a concern for a prospective student as the tuition here is pretty low anyway.

5. Universidad de San Pedro Sula

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 1,000 to USD 2,500

Universidad de San Pedro Sula (USAP) began its journey in the second half of 1978 as one of the first private universities in Honduras, with only 12 academic staff. But today, it has over 200 academic staff offering higher education to 3,000-plus students. It is situated about three miles northwest of downtown San Pedro Sula. The private university is organized into two faculties, Faculty of Technical Sciences and Faculty of Administrative Economic Sciences, that house a total of ten schools.

Through these schools, USAP facilitates 22 undergraduate programs. Through a separate graduate school named DUX School of Business and Government, the university facilitates six master’s programs. While the university charges around USD 1,000 annually for bachelor’s programs, the master’s programs typically cost between USD 1,000 to USD 2,500 per year.

6. Universidad José Cecilio del Valle

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 1,000 to USD 2,500

Universidad José Cecilio del Valle (UJCV) is the oldest private university in the country, coming into being in the first half of 1978. It consists of two campuses: one in Tegucigalpa and the other in Comayagua. This cheap university in Honduras has a total enrollment of over 3,000.

At UJCV, as many as 18 undergraduate programs are offered, including Industrial Engineering, IT Engineering, Architecture, Journalism, and Law. The number of graduate programs available at this university is seven. Moreover, several associate programs are also offered here.   

7. Universidad Cristiana Evangélica Nuevo Milenio

  • Annual Tuition for International Students: USD 1,000

Founded in 2001, Universidad Cristiana Evangélica Nuevo Milenio (UCENM) is a private Christian university with nine campuses across Honduras. The main campus is in San Pedro Sula, while the remaining eight are located in La Esperanza, Pena Blanca, Tegucigalpa, Juticalpa, Catacamas, Santa Rosa de Copan, San Lorenzo, and Tocoa. The non-profit university has a student population north of 3,000.   

UCENM offers bachelor’s programs in Business Administration, Law, Systems Engineering, Community Health, Theology, Psychology, Nutrition, and Marketing. It also offers a master’s program in Business Management and a few associate programs.
