You might think that you need to go into the Amazons to find animals, but that is not always true. The coast of Brazil has an innumerable amount of fish, turtles, dolphins, and even whales!

Free and Cheap Universities in Brazil

1. University of Sao Paulo (USP)

The University of Sao Paulo is known as the best university in the country of Brazil, and it is the most affordable to international students since it offers free education to accepted students. Because of its reputation and its affordability, the competition for admission is really high, so be prepared to give your best when applying to USP.

Interestingly, 14 of the 41 presidents of Brazil have studied at the University of Sao Paulo before going on to their government careers. Many international students are attracted to USP due to its perks, and many have finished their education in USP before going into their careers. Focused on science and technology, USP is the leading university in research, and they continue to impress the world by building more and more research centers.

2. Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Since it is a federal institution, UFRGS offers free tuition even for international students, but the cost that you need to consider is the housing, the food, and other events that require fees. The tuition fee is covered, but it is not a full-ride scholarship so you need to pay the living costs and the traveling fees.

Many students think that getting free tuition means that they can study absolutely for free, but that is not the case. There are many other fees that pile on top of the necessary fees, so it is necessary to have a financial backup plan when applying for only-tuition free colleges.

3. Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Unlike the others, PUC-Rio is a private institution that offers an education with Christian principles. Accepting all kinds of students with different religions and backgrounds, PUC-Rio is steadily growing in its numbers. Although PUC-Rio offers a great education, keep in mind that it charges a tuition fee, and the public universities do not.

Because of this difference, most students do not apply to private universities, but rather apply for public universities that offer free tuition and better education. If you wish for a smaller competition, apply for private institutions since most local students apply for public institutions.

4. Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)

Located in a beautiful landscape, the UFSC offers free education to its students, and it is one of the top universities in Brazil and in Latin America. Having four campuses nationwide, the UFSC amounts to 50,000 people, and 30,000 UFSC are undergraduate students. Because of their accredited teaching and friendly environment, UFSC has more than 300 partnerships with universities worldwide.

Most of their focus is on undergraduate students by offering more than 100 undergraduate programs. There are near to 70 programs for masters and about 50 programs for doctoral students. Even though they have so many international partnerships, they are constantly increasing their numbers to allow their students a wider selection when they are out for exchange programs.

5. Federal University of ABC (UFABC)

Established in 2006, the Federal University of ABC is one of the youngest institutions in the country of Brazil. Still, partly under construction, the campuses of UFABC have established a reputation for good teaching and even better for research. UFABC uses a liberal arts approach, by teaching the student in a general way, and by narrowing in on the student’s major as years progress.

Because of their focus on research, the programs of UFABC are designed to produce researchers to fit their own needs. Graduates of UFABC are content to stay at their home university to research, but most of them go outside their comfort zone to accomplish great things.

Conclusion: Public University = Free Tuition

Since most of the popular universities are backed by the government, they offer free tuition even to international students. Interestingly, most of the top universities in Brazil were public universities, which in turn lead to some of the cheapest universities for international students.
