Can international students enroll in medical schools in Hungary?

The answer is yes. In fact, an average of 850 international students get accepted into the medical university in Hungary each year. And it has four medical universities with medical instruction in English that accept two (Debrecen University) to ten (Szeged University) students per academic year. Here are the main requirements for application and admission:

  • The candidate must be at least 18 years old and not older than 30.
  • Completed or at the last year of high school/secondary school upon application.
  • Matriculation / School Leaving Certificate if the candidate completed high school.
  • Curriculum vitae in English
  • Motivation letter from the previous school
  • Copy of valid passport and passport-size photo
  • Medical certificate- certifying that the student is physically and mentally fit to study.
  • Payment of the admission fee

Other requirements may or may not be waivable upon application, such as the entrance exams; some schools like Semmelweis University give special exemption to holders of undergraduate degrees or high school students with excellent grades and scores in IELTS/TOEFL. What is the medical curriculum like in medical schools in Hungary?

Medical universities in Hungary offer medical programs in both English and German, the former is more popular to overseas students, but the latter is cheaper. Like in most European schools, Hungarian medical education also lasts for six years. Here is a summary of the medical curriculum in Hungary from the Semmelweis University English Language Medical program.

The six-year program has three pre-clinical years, two clinical years, and one internship/placement year. During the first two years of the program, the instruction will be in English. However, at the third year or the start of the clinical years, the student will be expected to know the Hungarian language since patients they will encounter will mostly be Hungarians in their training at outpatient hospitals and clinics. Do not worry, as the university will be offering Hungarian language courses during the freshman year of the study.
