According to the Council for Higher Education’s Study in Israel portal, the country has 61 higher education institutions, including 9 universities, 31 colleges, and 21 teacher-training colleges. Several Israeli universities also appear in current global and subject-specific rankings.

Israel also offers strong legal education. University law faculties commonly provide undergraduate and graduate law degrees, including LL.B., LL.M., and doctoral pathways. Many schools also provide interdisciplinary study options, clinics, exchange programs, and selected English-taught courses or international programs.

Top Law Schools in Israel

1. Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is one of Israel’s most established law schools. The faculty states that it was established in 1949 as the first law faculty at an Israeli university and describes itself as a flagship institution for legal research and education in Israel.

The LL.B. is a four-year program. The faculty encourages joint degrees, interdisciplinary courses, clinical legal education, and exchange programs, giving students opportunities to broaden their legal studies with other academic fields and practical experience.

International students and English speakers can find selected English-taught options at the faculty. Current international offerings include an LL.M. with a specialization in International Law and Human Rights and an LL.M. in Global Business Law. The faculty’s international program menu also lists an M.A. in Law with a specialization in Human Rights and Transitional Justice, thesis-track options, Ph.D. programs, exchange programs, and courses in English.

2. Tel Aviv University

Commonly known as TAU Law, the Buchmann Faculty of Law traces its roots to the Tel Aviv School of Law and Economics, which was established in 1935. Tel Aviv University describes it as Israel’s oldest law school and a globally connected institution with students from Israel and abroad.

TAU Law offers a broad curriculum that includes courses, seminars, workshops, and clinical programs, with many courses available in English. Its degree programs include the LL.B., Hebrew-language LL.M. programs, a one-year International LL.M. taught entirely in English, and Ph.D. studies.

The faculty also offers joint executive LL.M. programs for Israeli lawyers: the TAU-Berkeley Executive LL.M. in Commercial Law and the TAU-Northwestern Executive LL.M. in Public Law. These programs include substantial international components.

The Parasol Foundation International LL.M. is a 10-month, three-semester program taught in English. Students may complete a general track or specialize in International Law and Human Rights, Law and Technology, or Business Law. The program is offered without a thesis requirement.

3. Bar-Ilan University

The faculty offers undergraduate law studies and several joined programs. Current faculty pages list an LL.B. first-year option in English, an LL.B. and LL.M. joined program, an LL.B. and M.A. in Business Management, a joined program with the Department of Social Sciences, and a joined program with the Department of Philosophy. The LL.B. and LL.M. joined program can be completed in four years, and admission requires a first-year average of at least 85.

At the graduate level, the faculty offers LL.M. options, including an LL.M. with a thesis and an intensive LL.M. for judges, lawyers, and jurists. Current faculty information for the LL.M. with thesis states that studies last two years, or four semesters. The faculty also offers M.A. programs in legal studies for non-law graduates, including tracks for graduates in economics, business administration, accounting, social sciences, humanities, medicine, and health care.

One distinct graduate program is the M.A. in Regulation and Environmental Policy, an interdisciplinary program offered with the Department of Geography and Environment. Doctoral programs are also available for outstanding students, including doctoral study in law-related fields such as Regulation and Public Policy and Jewish Law.

4. University of Haifa

Current faculty materials list study options at the bachelor’s, master’s, legal studies master’s, and doctoral levels. In addition to domestic law studies, the faculty offers international and global-law opportunities, including English-language courses through its Global Law Program.

International students interested in law and economics can also review the European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE). Current EMLE information lists the program as a full-time, one-year, three-term, 60 ECTS program taught in English, leading to an LL.M. in Law and Economics.
