1. University of Malaya

Located in Kuala Lumpur, the University of Malaya is a public research institution. It is the most prestigious and established higher education institution in Malaysia. International applicants must take an English language competence test required by the university. However, this is not necessary if the applicant is from an English-speaking nation. A TOEFL score of 33 is required for students wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree in economics, whilst an 80 is usually accepted for graduate-level studies.

2. University of Technology Malaysia

Included in the top 200 by QS University rankings, the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) is a prestigious public research-intensive university in Malaysia.

Here the required TOEFL has a range of 46 to 95, and we recommend you score as high as you can. However, you can improve your English at the Intensive English Programme (IEP) at Language Academy, UTM, or CIEP at ELS Language Centers in Malaysia if you do not fulfill the standards for your selected program in terms of English competence.

3. University of Putra Malaysia

Located in Selangor, the University of Putra Malaysia is a public research institution in Malaysia. At the moment, two schools, eleven institutes, and fifteen faculties oversee university operations. The required TOEFL iBT score ranges from 65 to 78, however, you should aim for a number that is higher than the required minimum score to up your chances of getting admitted. In case, your score falls between 51 and 64, you might get a provisional offer; however, you need to enroll in the PIE2 program during your first semester.

4. University of Science, Malaysia

Universiti Sains Malaysia, a public research institution in Malaysia, was established in 1969 and is commonly referred to as the University of Science, Malaysia. Its diligence and high caliber of instruction have earned it a spot in the QS World University Rankings 2024 at number 137. For overseas applicants, the TOEFL general requirement of 40 is feasible. However, the minimum score could change depending on the course. You must review the specific criteria for your course to know if you are eligible to be admitted or not. Ensure that you are able to attain the minimum score required by your preferred course.

5. Petronas Technology University

Founded in 1997, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS is a research institution located in Malaysia. Currently, UTP is serving over 7,500 students through different programs. The minimum TOEFL iBT score is 40. The minimal score required to apply for business or engineering, however, is between 46 – 50. Therefore, your chances of getting admitted are rather high if your score is higher than 60.

6. Northern University of Malaysia

Located in Kedah, Malaysia, the Northern University of Malaysia is a public management institution. The university has a solid reputation for providing high-quality instruction and student support. To apply, an international undergraduate applicant must provide a TOEFL iBT score of 40. The university accepts test scores that were obtained on paper for graduate applicants. We advise you to aim for a score above 70 to be considered for your ideal position.

7. Multimedia University

Established in 1997, Multimedia University is a well-known private university in Malaysia. It is the first private institution in Malaysia to carry on offering top-notch education across the globe. To apply to the university, you need to have at least a 42 on the TOEFL iBT. Since the competition in admitting students is high, aim for a higher score of 80.

More than 10,000 colleges, universities, and other organizations accept the TOEFL exam. It comes in two types of tests applicants can take: the TOEFL-PBT and TOEFL-iBT. However, the majority of students take the online TOEFL iBT, which is approved by nearly all Malaysian universities. For most universities, a score of 60 to 80 on the TOEFL iBT is required. But do remember that the minimum required score may either be lower or higher depending on the program of your choice.
