TOEFL Scores Accepted at Universities in Finland
Many Finnish universities accept TOEFL iBT scores as proof of English language proficiency. Since TOEFL introduced its updated 1–6 score scale in January 2026, some Finnish universities now list requirements using both the older 0–120 scale and the newer 1–6 scale. Applicants should always confirm the score requirement on the official program page before applying. Here are some universities accepting TOEFL scores.
1. Aalto University
Aalto University is a public research university where science and art meet technology and business. It is located in the coastal city of Espoo. Aalto University started operating on Jan. 1, 2010, after the merger of the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the University of Art and Design Helsinki.
Bachelor’s and master’s programs in the fields of technology, art and design, and business are offered to international students. For the Bachelor’s Programme in Design and Media, applicants proving English proficiency with TOEFL must meet a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 92. In master’s admissions, Aalto requires TOEFL iBT 92 with a writing score of 22 for tests taken before Jan. 21, 2026, or an overall score of 4.5 with at least 4.0 in all subtests for tests taken on or after Jan. 21, 2026. Aalto accepts TOEFL iBT Home Edition and does not accept TOEFL Essentials or TOEFL ITP.
2. Arcada University of Applied Sciences
Arcada University of Applied Sciences is a multidisciplinary university of applied sciences in Finland. At its international campus in Helsinki, students and staff work across disciplines in areas such as business, IT, energy and materials technology, health and welfare, culture and media, and healthcare.
Arcada offers bachelor’s and master’s programs in Swedish and English. TOEFL requirements vary by program and application route. Arcada’s separate-application English language requirements list TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition minimum 67, or 3.5 for tests completed after January 2026. Some program-specific application pages for English-taught bachelor’s programs have listed TOEFL iBT 79, so applicants should check the admission route for their chosen program before applying.
3. Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT
The Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT, also known as LUT University, calls itself the “Land of the Curious” and focuses on technology, business, and social sciences. Its campuses are in Lappeenranta and Lahti. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, LUT University is listed in the 251–300 band.
LUT offers bachelor’s and master’s programs in the fields of business, technology, and social sciences. TOEFL iBT requirements for bachelor’s applicants vary by admission route: some technology bachelor’s admission criteria list a minimum of 80 with at least 20 in writing, while some rolling-admission criteria list a minimum of 90 with at least 22 in writing and speaking, or 4.5 on the new TOEFL iBT scale. For master’s applicants, LUT lists TOEFL iBT 92 or new TOEFL iBT 4.5.
4. University of Lapland
The University of Lapland is a public university located in Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle. It is the northernmost university in Finland and the European Union, making it a distinctive study environment for students interested in northern and Arctic perspectives.
The university’s 2026 English-taught master’s programs include Arctic Indigenous Cinema, Arctic World Politics, Northern Tourism, Sustainable Art and Design, and Tourism, Culture and International Management. The university is also involved in the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Programme in Service Design Strategies and Innovations. For master’s admissions, a TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition total score of 92 is required for tests completed before Jan. 21, 2026; for tests completed on or after Jan. 21, 2026, the required total score is 4.5.
5. University of Helsinki
The University of Helsinki is Finland’s oldest and largest institution of academic education and research and has a wide range of disciplines. Its history dates back to 1640 in Turku, and the university moved to Helsinki in 1828.
The university accepts TOEFL scores for its bachelor’s programs and its international master’s programs. If you are planning to study at the university, the minimum TOEFL iBT requirement is 92 with at least 22 in the writing section. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is accepted for bachelor’s and master’s admissions, and TOEFL iBT Paper Edition is also accepted for master’s admissions.
6. University of Jyväskylä
The University of Jyväskylä is an international research university in Jyväskylä, Finland. It offers high-quality, research-based programs in several fields, including education, business, information technology, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
The university offers two-year master’s programs for international students, including programs such as Banking and International Finance and Educational Sciences. For master’s applicants proving English proficiency with TOEFL, the University of Jyväskylä requires a minimum total score of 92 on the 0–120 scale, or 4.5 for TOEFL score reports issued starting on Jan. 21, 2026.
7. University of Oulu
The University of Oulu is an international science university in Finland that creates new knowledge, well-being, and innovations through research and education. It is ranked in the top 3% of universities globally. Founded in 1958, it is one of the largest universities in Finland and offers education and research across fields such as medicine, dentistry, natural sciences, technology, business, education, and humanities.
The university accepts international students seeking bachelor’s and master’s degrees into its community. For bachelor’s applicants, the minimum TOEFL iBT requirement is 78 on the 0–120 scale, or 4.0 on the new TOEFL score scale. For master’s applicants, the minimum requirement is 92 with at least 20 in writing, or 4.5 with at least 4 in writing on the new TOEFL score scale.
