The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based test) is accepted in all universities across Canada. More than 80% of universities that offer graduate programs prefer the TOEFL iBT over other tests, and results of TOEFL iBT tests sent to Canadian universities outnumber all other English tests combined.

Universities Accepting TOEFL Scores in Canada

English is the medium of instruction that is predominantly used for the programs offered to international students in universities across the country. The TOEFL helps universities screen students according to their mastery of the language, and here are seven Canadian universities that accept TOEFL scores.

1. University of Toronto

The University of Toronto is one of Canada’s most prestigious and best-known universities. It is a public research university funded by the state. It is a world leader in inventions, start-ups, licenses, and options based on research. Located at Queen’s Park in Toronto, Ontario, the university is right at the very center of a vibrant and diverse community.

More than 700 undergraduate programs in various disciplines such as the Humanities and Social Sciences, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Computer Sciences, and Engineering, as well as more than 300 postgraduate programs, are available for international students. The language requirement for admission into the university is a minimum TOEFL score of 89, with 22 for the writing section. A discretionary range of 89-99 with 22 for writing may also be accepted.

2. University of Alberta

The University of Alberta is one of the oldest universities in Canada, established in 1908. It is ranked as the top 5 university in the country and is in the top 120 all over the world. It prides itself on offering a rich and meaningful experience on top of high-quality educational standards.

With over 200 undergraduate programs and more than 500 graduate programs, the most popular selections are Nursing, Engineering, Chemistry, and Agriculture Science. To get into these programs, aspiring students must present a TOEFL score of at least 90, with no less than 21 in all skill sections.

3. University of Calgary

The University of Calgary is a public research university in the heartland of Alberta. It is home to a multidisciplinary community of academicians and students who pursue excellence in education to make a positive change in the world.

The university offers a wide variety of degrees across different disciplines such as business, humanities, history, medical sciences, and technology. To be admitted, aspiring students must present a TOEFL Score of at least 86 for most undergraduate programs with the exception of Nursing which requires at least 92 with a minimum of 23 in each skill section, and for Education which requires a minimum score of 108 with a minimum of 27 in each skill section.

4. University of Ottawa

The University of Ottawa is a public research university in the Canadian capital of Ottawa, where programs are taught in the country’s co-official languages, English and French. It is noted as the largest bilingual university in the world and is also one of Canada’s oldest universities, having been established in 1848.

A variety of graduate and undergraduate programs across the disciplines of arts, engineering, social sciences, health sciences, education, law, management, medicine, and more are available for international students. In order to be admitted into an undergraduate program, a TOEFL score of 86 and above is required, with at least 22 for the writing section.

5. University of Victoria

The University of Victoria is one the foremost Canadian public research-intensive universities. Established in 1903, it has built more than a hundred years’ worth of recognition as a leading force in research, teaching, and community engagement.

The university offers a wide array of programs for both undergraduate and graduate studies, which include Business, Education, Fine Arts, and Science. A minimum TOEFL score of 90 is required for both levels, with at least 20 for each skill section.

6. Concordia University

Concordia University is hailed as an innovative and diverse learning environment located in the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Quebec. It is defined by a culture of excellence, experiential learning, and cross-functional research.

The university offers a very diverse range of programs for graduate and undergraduate studies which include Aerospace Engineering, Biochemistry, Business Studies, Entrepreneurship, History, Political Science, and more. A minimum TOEFL score of 95 is required for admission, with no skill section below 20.

7. University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia is one of the world’s top 20 universities. It is acknowledged as an exemplary university in terms of quality education, diversity, and innovation.

UBC is globally popular for its acclaimed MBA program, though its other graduate and undergraduate programs rank among the top 100 courses in the world as well. To be admitted into this prestigious university, a TOEFL score of at least 90 with 22 for reading and listening and 21 for writing and speaking is required.
