Ireland has a modern and internationally connected higher education sector that includes traditional universities, technological universities, and specialist institutions. Central Statistics Office figures for April 2025 show that about 31% of the population was under 25 years of age.

Global engagement is an important feature of Irish higher education. According to the Higher Education Authority, Irish higher education institutions recorded 44,535 non-Irish-domiciled student enrollments in the 2024/25 academic year. As English is widely spoken in Ireland, the country attracts students from around the world.

Beyond education, Ireland is an island nation rich in history and character. Known as the Emerald Isle, the country combines green landscapes, mountains, and rugged coastlines with a distinctive culture and lively nightlife.

In Ireland, students can pursue a high-quality education while experiencing the country’s culture firsthand. Check out the guide below on how to study for a bachelor’s degree in Ireland.

Bachelor’s Degree Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary by institution, education system, and program. Students applying for a bachelor’s degree generally need evidence of secondary-school completion and their academic transcripts. Some programs also have subject-specific requirements. Applicants should consult the official country-specific and course-specific pages for their chosen university.

For Trinity College Dublin, non-EU applicants should review the country-specific and course-specific entry requirements before applying. Trinity accepts school-leaving qualifications from a wide range of education systems. Direct applications are completed online through the relevant course page, and applicants should submit the requested supporting documents and English-language evidence where applicable. Students can find further details in Trinity’s official application guidance.

Meanwhile, University College Dublin (UCD) publishes academic and English-language requirements by curriculum. Cambridge A Level applicants need at least three A Level subjects at Grade C or better and Grade C or better in the remaining GCSE subjects, with six distinct subjects required in total. The English-language requirement for these applicants is Grade C at GCSE level. International Baccalaureate applicants need at least 24 points and the award of the IB Diploma. English-language thresholds depend on the language type and level presented. French Baccalauréat applicants need an overall score of 10 with at least six acceptable subjects; the English-language requirement is 13 at coefficient 16 or higher, or 15 otherwise. US curriculum applicants need a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 3.2 out of 4.0. ACT or SAT scores, AP examinations, IB subject examinations, and college or university GPA may also be considered. Standardized tests are not required for every program. Applicants should check the relevant curriculum page and program-specific requirements before applying.

The next immigration step depends on the student’s nationality and planned length of stay. Non-EEA and non-Swiss nationals need a letter of enrollment and evidence that their fees have been paid. Depending on their nationality, they may also need an Irish visa. Students planning to stay longer than 90 days must register after arriving in Ireland. Visa-required students coming for a course lasting more than three months should review the long-term study visa guidance. Supporting documents include a passport, photographs, a letter of acceptance, proof of fee payment, evidence of academic and English-language ability, proof of finances, and private medical insurance.

Language Proficiency Tests Needed for Undergraduate Studies

Applicants may need to demonstrate English proficiency for university admission. Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) also publishes separate minimum English-language standards for study-visa purposes. For courses other than secondary-level and preparatory English programs, the current visa minimums include IELTS Academic 5.0, PTE Academic 30, and TOEFL iBT 61. These are visa minimums only; universities may require higher scores.

For example, Trinity College Dublin’s Band B standard entry requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no individual band below 6.0. Trinity accepts several other qualifications, and some courses use higher entry bands. Applicants should review Trinity’s current English-language requirements and their course page before applying.

Bachelor’s Degree Application Process

Step 1. Apply for the Course

Application routes depend on the institution and the applicant’s fee status. At Trinity College Dublin, applicants from EU or EEA countries normally apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO), while non-EU or non-EEA applicants normally apply directly to Trinity through the online portal. Non-EU applicants should select the “Non-EU Application” link on the relevant course page. Each direct Trinity course application requires a separate non-refundable application fee of €55. At University College Dublin, fee status also determines the application route: EU-fee applicants use CAO, while international applicants apply directly to UCD. Applicants should follow the current instructions on their chosen university’s website.

Step 2. Apply for the Student Visa

Visa-required students planning to study in Ireland for more than three months should apply for a long-term study visa through the Automated Visa Application and Tracking System (AVATS) up to three months before their date of travel. After completing the online form, applicants must print, sign, and date the summary form and follow its instructions for submitting supporting documents. The current visa fees are €60 for a single-entry visa and €100 for a multi-entry visa. Some applicants are exempt, and additional local charges may apply.

Ireland is not part of the Schengen area and applies its own visa and border policies. An Irish visa does not automatically authorize travel within the Schengen area. Students should check the requirements for each planned destination and, where required, apply separately for the appropriate Schengen visa.
