The Journey

My name is Waiza Rafique, and I am a lawyer, human rights advocate, and policy consultant from Pakistan.

I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship for the 2020–21 academic session to pursue an LLM in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. I chose this field because of my strong interest in justice reform, violence against women, human rights, and strengthening legal systems through evidence-based policy. My academic and professional journey has always focused on bridging law with real social impact.

Educational Background

I completed my LLB (Honours) from Punjab University Law College, Lahore, one of Pakistan’s top law schools. I later pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in International Affairs and another in Banking Law and Litigation. My strong academic background in law, international relations, and public policy prepared me well for advanced legal studies. My coursework consistently focused on human rights, criminal justice reform, and social justice issues. My undergraduate performance and professional experience in litigation and policy advisory roles strengthened my Chevening application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Sussex?

I researched UK universities offering strong programmes in criminal law and justice reform, focusing on faculty expertise, course structure, research opportunities, and global reputation.

I explored university websites, academic publications, alumni stories, and Chevening scholar experiences to understand which programmes best matched my goals.

Standardized Tests

I did not take any English language proficiency test as I made out a case for exemption based on my research, writings and publications, which was accepted.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

I focused heavily on:

  • Demonstrating leadership experience
  • Clear career goals linked to social impact
  • Strong academic motivation
  • Evidence of public service and policy engagement

I carefully connected my background in law, human rights advocacy, gender justice, and governance reforms with Chevening’s mission of developing global leaders.

I spent significant time refining my essays to clearly explain:

  • Why the UK
  • Why my chosen field
  • How I would contribute to Pakistan after returning

How Was Your Experience at the University of Sussex?

My academic experience in the UK was rigorous, intellectually stimulating, and transformative. The programme combined theory with real-world policy perspectives, encouraging critical thinking and comparative legal analysis.

Despite the challenges of studying during COVID-19, the academic environment remained supportive and research-focused.

How Do You Rate the University of Sussex Academically and Why?

I would rate it very highly due to:

  • Strong faculty expertise
  • Research-driven teaching
  • Critical engagement with real-world legal systems
  • Emphasis on analytical and independent thinking

How Does the University of Sussex Support International Students?

The university provided:

  • Academic guidance
  • Wellbeing services
  • International student support offices
  • Online resources during the pandemic

This support was especially valuable during COVID-19.

What Did You Pursue After the Scholarship?

After completing my LLM, I returned to Pakistan and continued working in:

  • Human rights advocacy
  • Legal reform and policy advisory
  • Gender justice initiatives
  • Consulting for UN agencies and government bodies

I later authored a book based on my LLM research and expanded my work into evidence-based policy reform.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of:

  • Clear leadership experience
  • Strong link between education and social impact
  • Commitment to returning and contributing to Pakistan
  • Real-world policy and legal reform experience
  • A focused vision for justice sector improvement

Rather than only academic ambition, I demonstrated how the degree would directly benefit communities and institutions.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

I would have started the preparation process even earlier and would have spoken to two to three referees as a backup plan. However, the overall process taught me valuable skills in strategic planning and self-reflection.

What Advice Would You Give Future Applicants?

  • Start early
  • Be clear about your goals
  • Link your background with real-world impact
  • Show leadership, not just good grades
  • Be authentic in your story
  • Demonstrate how you will give back to your country

Chevening looks for future leaders who will create positive change.
