The Journey

My name is Tafan Kamal Karim, and I am from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. I have always had a passion for literature and creative expression, which inspired me to pursue further education in this field. I completed my MA in English Literature and Creative Writing at Hull University in 2018–2019 through the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. I am currently teaching English literature and writing skills at both the General Education and Translation departments at Cihan University in Sulaimaniya. I decided to pursue this degree because I am deeply interested in understanding human stories and developing my creative and analytical skills to contribute meaningfully to the literary and academic world.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship, which is a fully funded scholarship awarded by the UK Government. This scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, and other academic allowances, providing full support for my studies at Hull University. I was fortunate to be selected among many competitive applicants, which reflects my academic dedication and leadership potential.

Educational Background

I hold a previous degree, e.g., a Bachelor’s in English Language and Literature with an average of 88.5%. My previous education provided me with a solid foundation in literary analysis, critical thinking, and research skills, which directly prepared me to pursue advanced studies in English Literature and Creative Writing. Throughout my academic journey, I have engaged in writing projects, literary research, and creative workshops that strengthened my ability to think creatively and communicate effectively.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Hull University?

To prepare for my application to Hull University, I thoroughly researched programs that aligned with my academic and career goals, reviewing course content, faculty expertise, research opportunities, and alumni achievements. I also sought guidance from mentors and alumni with experience studying in the UK.

At my previous institution, there were no courses that combined Literature and Creative Writing—the combination I needed. I have always been a keen observer of English, Turkish, and Kurdish literature and have written numerous stories inspired by the people I met while working with NGOs, particularly documenting youth success stories. Receiving the Chevening scholarship made it possible for me to pursue a program at Hull University that integrates both Literature and Creative Writing. This opportunity allows me to enhance my skills while preparing to create meaningful projects for adolescents, especially girls, which has long been my dream.

Standardized Tests and How You Prepared

As part of my application, I took the IELTS exam, achieving a score of 7.5, which demonstrates my proficiency in English. To prepare, I followed a structured study plan that included practice tests, reading and writing exercises, and regular feedback from a qualified tutor. I also focused on developing my academic writing skills and enhancing my vocabulary to ensure I could meet the demands of a UK-based university program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Chevening Scholarship?

Applying for the Chevening Scholarship required thorough preparation and careful planning. I studied the scholarship requirements, including leadership experience, career goals, and community involvement. I worked on articulating my vision for contributing to society, gathering strong recommendation letters, and writing a compelling personal statement. I also attended webinars and interacted with previous Chevening scholars to understand the selection criteria and strengthen my application. This preparation helped me present a well-rounded application that reflected both my academic achievements and my potential as a future leader.

How is (was) Your Experience at Hull University?

My experience at Hull University has been very positive. The Student Center, as well as the Registration and Admission Office, were extremely helpful throughout my studies. Additionally, my Chevening Scholarship officer provided invaluable guidance, helping me navigate any difficulties or concerns I had. Their support was always readily available, which made my academic journey smooth and enjoyable.

How Do You Rate Hull University Academically and Why?

I would rate Hull University very highly both academically and culturally. What stood out to me were the creative writing sessions, each taught by a published author, which provided invaluable insight into the craft. Beyond academics, the administration, student support, and a wide range of activities made my experience even richer. The library offered excellent resources, and the cafés and student rest areas created a welcoming environment. During my time there (2018–2020), Hull was designated a City of Culture, so there were numerous events both on campus and in the city. I also had the opportunity to meet many friends with whom I still maintain close relationships, creating unforgettable memories alongside my academic growth.

How Does Hull University Support International Students?

Hull University provides strong support for international students by organizing events and courses that help with both personal adaptation and academic integration. The university hosts gatherings, campaigns, and cultural activities, including art exhibitions and gallery visits, which create opportunities for international students to connect, communicate, and establish themselves within the campus community. These initiatives greatly enhance both social and academic experiences for students from abroad.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of my strong involvement in humanitarian aid charities and programs supporting adolescents, combined with my passion for storytelling. These experiences reflect both my leadership skills and my commitment to creating a positive impact in my community. Additionally, my ability to communicate effectively through stories (whether written or spoken) helped convey my vision, values, and dedication, which I believe resonated strongly with the selection committee.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would organize my ideas more effectively, providing more concrete examples from my professional experiences and my work with charities. I would also focus on maximizing every opportunity throughout the application journey to ensure that my experiences and skills are presented in the best possible way.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice would be to take the time to reflect deeply on your goals and motivations. Understand why you want to pursue the scholarship, what you hope to achieve, and how it aligns with your personal and professional growth. Consider the cultural aspects and traditions of the place you plan to study, and think about the stories and experiences waiting to be discovered there. Approach the process with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a vivid sense of purpose, and let your passion shine through in your application.
