The Journey

My name is Sebuoeng Tau from the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, currently based in Brighton, UK, pursuing a Master’s in Development Studies at the University of Sussex’s Institute of Development Studies (IDS), a global leader in development research and learning. My academic and professional focus spans gender equality, climate justice, and community resilience. With a background in community development, public service, and social policy, I’m building the skills to drive inclusive climate action and embed gender perspectives into local and global policymaking.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I’m a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The award covers full tuition, along with living expenses, travel costs, and visa support. Applications for the 2026–27 Chevening cohort open on 5 August 2025 and close on 7 October 2025. If you’re ready to lead, apply.

Educational Background

I hold a BA in Development Studies and Sociology from the National University of Lesotho (2013–2018), awarded with Second Class Second Division. My studies built a strong foundation in development theory, social analysis, and policy frameworks. I was not the highest-ranking student, but that is not what Chevening is about. It recognises impact, leadership, and vision. As long as your grades secure university admission, it’s your work and purpose that carry the application.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Sussex and Other Institutions?

I used the Chevening website’s course finder to search for “Development Studies.” It provided a list of eligible programs and universities with minimum entry requirements. I chose the University of Sussex, SOAS, and the University of Bradford based on their module offerings, each aligned strongly with my interests in gender, climate justice, and inclusive development. I didn’t take any standardized tests. Instead, I used my Cambridge Overseas School Certificate (COSC) as proof of English proficiency, which was accepted by the University of Sussex.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

It was my first time applying, so I read almost every word on the Chevening website to understand the requirements and avoid missing key details. It covered all the questions I had. I also watched YouTube videos from alumni, which helped me structure strong, intentional essays. The application includes four 500-word essays on: Leadership skills; Networking skills; Chosen university courses and programs; and Career plan. I knew my story, my goals, and how Chevening could support my vision. I wrote with honesty and purpose, gave my best effort, and asked Chevening alumni to review my essays. As a Christian, I also prayed throughout the process. It kept me grounded and hopeful.

How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Sussex?

Studying at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) has been an incredible experience. At first, I struggled with impostor syndrome, coming from a very different teaching and learning style. But the supportive community at IDS quickly helped me find my confidence. I’ve enjoyed every minute, learning from world-class professors, exchanging ideas with students from across the globe, and growing both academically and personally. And being in Brighton, with its vibrant seaside atmosphere and nearby Stanmer Park, has made the experience even more special.

How Do You Rate the University of Sussex Academically and Why?

IDS is ranked #1 in the world for Development Studies, and it truly lives up to that reputation. The program delivered exactly what I was hoping for: rigorous content, practical application, and real-world relevance. From day one, I’ve felt academically supported through accessible tutors and strong mental health resources, which made the transition smoother. The environment is welcoming, the energy is positive, and I genuinely feel prepared to apply what I’ve learned in my work back home. It’s a place that grows you.

How Does the University of Sussex Support International Students?

Sussex offers support for international students from arrival to graduation. These include visa and immigration guidance from dedicated advisers, help with opening UK bank accounts and settling in, academic support like English language workshops and study skills tutorials, mental health and wellbeing services, including disability support, career services with job listings, CV help, and one-on-one consultations, and social activities and networking through the Spirit of Sussex Award and Students’ Union societies. The university was ranked #1 for international student support in Southeast England at the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2025, a reflection of how welcome and supported students feel on campus.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I tailored every essay to reflect who I am and why I do what I do. I chose universities and programs that aligned deeply with my goals and showed how Chevening could amplify that impact. I didn’t overthink it; I was honest, strategic, and passionate. I knew my strengths, acknowledged my challenges, and focused on the change I want to create in Lesotho and beyond. And in the interview, I simply spoke from the heart.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I’d trust myself more because the process is intense, but believing in your story makes all the difference.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
