The Journey

Hi, I am Saeda from Afghanistan, based in Berlin, Germany. I come from a background in economics and development studies, and I have always been passionate about understanding how policy, data, and international cooperation can improve people’s lives.

I pursued my higher education in economics and development because I wanted to contribute to evidence-based policymaking, particularly in fragile and developing contexts. My academic and professional journey has been closely linked to working with international organizations and governments to address socio-economic challenges.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship (Class of 2020) to pursue my Master of Science in Development Studies at the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom. This is a fully funded scholarship that covers tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I received an Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) Scholarship (2018) to study for an executive master’s degree in Economic Policy at the University of Central Asia (UCA). It was hybrid, so I worked and studied at the same time.

Later in 2021, I was also offered a fully funded PhD scholarship in the same university I did my Maters, but due to unprecedented (partly also personal) circumstances I could not relocate.

I have also received other scholarships like the HPAIR - Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations Scholarship (2020), which supported my participation in an international academic conference at Harvard University.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Pune, India (GPA 3.5/4.0 - first-class). In addition, I completed a one-year diploma that complemented my three-year bachelor’s degree, bringing my education to the equivalent of four years of higher education, as required by the scholarship.

This academic pathway fulfilled one of the key eligibility criteria for the scholarship.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Glasgow?

How Did You Find Information About Chevening Scholarship and University of Glasgow?

I researched scholarship opportunities through networking, official websites such as Chevening, university websites, and online platforms. I also reached out to previous scholars to better understand the application process and expectations.

In addition, I carefully mapped universities based on my field of interest. I looked specifically at the modules they offered inside the program. This helped me identify institutions that were a strong fit for my interests.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the IELTS exam. I prepared through an intensive preparation course that prepares you specifically for the test.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

I dedicated significant time to preparing my application, especially the essays. I carefully reviewed what the scholarship was looking for in an outstanding candidate and made sure to align my experiences, achievements, and goals with those criteria, particularly in terms of leadership, networking, and impact.

I focused on clearly presenting my journey, motivations, and future plans, ensuring that my application told a coherent and authentic story.

In addition, I sought feedback from my network, particularly from individuals who had previously received the scholarship. Their insights helped me refine my essays and strengthen my overall application

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it presented a clear and consistent story. I was able to connect my academic background, professional experience, and future goals in a meaningful way.

In addition, I demonstrated leadership, initiative, and the ability to work in international and challenging environments, which aligned well with the scholarship’s objectives.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would plan earlier and start the process sooner. There are many different stages involved, such as language tests, GRE/GMAT preparation (if you must have one), university applications, and essay reviews, that all require time and careful attention. Starting earlier would allow for better preparation across each of these steps and make the overall process more manageable and less overwhelming.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

  • Start early and plan your application timeline
  • Be clear about your goals and how the scholarship fits into your plans
  • Focus on telling your story authentically
  • Highlight both your achievements and your impact
  • Seek feedback from mentors or previous scholars
  • Most importantly, believe in your potential and don’t hesitate to apply, even if you feel your background is not “perfect.”
