The Journey

My name is Ruby Uche, and I’m from Nigeria. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sustainable Finance and Accounting at the University of Sussex in the UK as a Chevening Scholar.

Coming from Africa, a continent already experiencing the harshest effects of the climate crisis, I began to reflect on how my background in economics and finance could contribute to solving the global sustainability challenge. That’s what drove me to this field. I’m deeply interested in how finance can be unlocked to accelerate Africa’s transition to a more sustainable trajectory. This program is helping me deepen my understanding of the powerful two-way relationship between finance and climate change: how finance affects climate outcomes, and how climate risks impact financial systems.

I’m particularly focused on the role of the private sector and blended finance, and how private capital, working in partnership with public institutions, can be mobilised to fill the climate finance gap.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship, a fully funded UK government award covering tuition, monthly stipend, visa fees, and travel costs. I chose Chevening because of its world-class professional network, leadership development focus, and the comprehensive support it offers scholars. It’s also worth noting that I won the scholarship on my very first attempt, something I’m deeply grateful for and proud of.

Educational Background

I hold a BSc in Economics, and my undergraduate education and early experiences helped me build strong analytical, financial, and research skills that prepared me for the rigour of postgraduate study in the UK.

In addition, I’ve worked for four years as a Project Manager at a leading fintech in the United Kingdom, also operational in Nigeria, where I was exposed to EU practices, agile project delivery, and high-level stakeholder coordination. This experience honed my ability to juggle multiple demands, lead strategically, and remain impact-focused.

Since beginning my Master’s program, I’ve engaged in multiple research projects and simulated sustainability consulting assignments on giant companies such as Iberdrola Renewables, Forterra, and Subway. I also serve as a Green Impact Auditor at the University of Sussex and currently represent my class as Course Representative, advocating for students and coordinating with faculty. These roles have expanded my leadership capacity, deepened my understanding of ESG frameworks, and allowed me to connect theory to practice in a tangible way.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Sussex?

First, I spent time reflecting on what Chevening stood for. I asked myself the honest question: Do I have what they’re looking for? And when I was convinced that I did, both in terms of experience and purpose, I searched for courses that were aligned with my long-term goal of contributing to climate finance in Africa.

I didn’t just apply to popular or top-ranked schools. I specifically looked for institutions that were known for their strength in sustainable development and that were also international student-friendly.

I didn’t take any standardized tests because my undergraduate degree was in English, and that was accepted by my chosen institution.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?

I spent time writing, reflecting, and redrafting my Chevening essays. I didn’t force anything, I simply poured out my life experiences and tried to connect them to the scholarship’s values: leadership, networking, academic strength, and a clear post-study career plan. I took time to map out what I had done in my life that truly mattered, and how those experiences could shape my future impact.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Authenticity, clarity, and alignment.

I wasn’t trying to sound perfect. I was honest. I told my story in my own voice. I made sure that every part of my application aligned with Chevening’s core values and with the direction I wanted to go in my career. My clarity of purpose and alignment with global sustainability goals were key.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Nothing.

Everything I did was intentional. I took time to reflect, to write, to get feedback. I’m proud of how I approached the entire process.

What Advice Would You Give  Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Don’t apply just because everyone else is applying.

Sit with yourself. Ask the hard question: Do I have what it takes? And if the answer is yes, go for it. If the answer is no, then ask: Will this opportunity help me become that person? Only apply when you’re clear on your “why.” That clarity will shape everything: your course choice, your essays, and your mindset.
