The Journey
My name is Rabecca Chelangat (commonly known as Becky) I am a teacher by profession, from Uganda. Over the last 7 years have been working with refugees in Norther Uganda, to help advocate for their rights through adult and mainstream education(very fulfilling task).I am currently pursuing a Master of Arts in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex, Brighton in the UK. My passion for equitable quality education for both refugees and their hosts drove me to pursue this course.

I received a fully funded Chevening Scholarship (Foreign Common Wealth and Development office) Courtesy of the UK government. The scholarship caters for all my fees, travel on living expenses.
Educational Background
My undergraduate degree is a bachelor of arts with Education, majoring in English language and literature in English at Makerere University, Kampala (Uganda).I had a second class honours lower degree( GPA 3.65). My education background gave me a great foundation in the refugee education response, and this directly aligned with my interests in the current course.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the University of Sussex?
Luckily for me, my university had all the information on their website, including guidance on how to write my personal statement and this was super helpful. I however made sure to give it my very best, clearly stating my background and future aspirations and how the university would be a steppingstone to this.
Since Uganda’s language of instruction throughout school is English, I did not do any English language proficiency tests.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
I must confess, the preparation phase was so demanding. Thanks to the Uganda Chevening officer, scholars and alumni, we had great guidance through webinars, covering all the essays in the application. I had to do vigorous preparation that involved extensive research and sacrifice in terms of time. I constantly had to ask people to help proofread my essays and give me constructive feedback.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I would say authenticity, I made sure I told my story and experiences from my point of view, not talking about ambiguous things. My passion for what I was doing and how I hoped to make it better was the exception.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would extend more grace to myself, try to consult all those who have been through the process and give it my very best.
What Advice Would You Give for Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
To believe in themselves, do it as though your life depends on it because if you don’t do your part, nothing will be done. So many opportunities await, you can only know when you take a step. There is a lot of help out there, do not be afraid to reach out.
