The Journey
My name is Paulina Shifugula, and I’m from Namibia. I currently work as a Software Developer at the National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST). I’m also pursuing an MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the University of Hull in the UK. My interest in AI stems from its potential to solve real-world problems and promote innovation, especially in emerging economies. I chose to further my studies in this field to deepen my knowledge and contribute to Namibia’s growing tech landscape.
Chevening Scholarship Details
I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with Bank of Namibia. It covers full tuition, monthly living expenses, travel costs, and other allowances. It was the only scholarship I applied for, and I committed to it fully once selected.
Educational Background
I hold a Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Software Development from the Namibia University of Science and Technology. My strong academic performance, including a solid GPA, along with work experience in software development and research, helped position me as a strong candidate for postgraduate studies in AI.
How I Prepared to Apply to UK Institutions?
I researched UK universities offering AI-focused programs aligned with my career goals. I prioritized institutions with strong research output, practical project opportunities, and diverse international student communities. I also reached out to current students and alumni through LinkedIn and webinars for insight.
Standardized Tests
Since Chevening does not require standardized tests like the GRE or GMAT, I only needed to meet the English language requirement. I took the IELTS Academic and scored an Overall of 6.5. I prepared using online practice tests and study guides over the course of a month.
How I Prepared to Apply for Chevening Scholarships
I began preparing early, drafting my essays, collecting references, and researching Chevening values. I had multiple rounds of feedback from trusted mentors and past scholars. I made sure every part of my application reflected leadership, networking, academic strength, and a clear career plan post-study.
What Made My Application Stand Out
I believe it was my clarity of purpose. My essays clearly demonstrated how I planned to apply my AI knowledge to contribute to national development, and how I had already taken initiative in tech-driven projects. My experience mentoring others and leading small initiatives also reinforced the leadership aspect Chevening looks for.
What I Would Have Done Differently
I would have started preparing my essays even earlier and sought feedback sooner. It would have reduced the last-minute stress. I also would have networked more with current Chevening scholars to strengthen my interview preparation.
Advice to Future Applicants
Start early and take the time to understand what the scholarship stands for. Be authentic in your essays, your story matters. Show clear links between your past, present goals, and future plans. Reach out to alumni, seek feedback, and don’t be afraid to revise your essays multiple times.
