The Journey

My name is Noorulain Hanif, and I am from Islamabad, Pakistan. I have two children. I have done an MSc. Development Economics in the United Kingdom as a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship. Previously, I had a degree in Economics, therefore, I pursued this Degree Program to improve my understanding of the subject.

Chevening Scholarship Details

I have received the Chevening Scholarship. The Chevening Scholarship is the UK government’s prestigious global scholarship program, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It offers fully funded master's degrees at leading UK universities to outstanding emerging leaders from around the world. Beyond academic study, Chevening is known for its emphasis on networking, leadership development, and fostering long-term international collaborations. I got admission to the University of Sussex.

Educational Background

Before applying for the Chevening Scholarship, I had a degree in Economics from Pakistan. I had worked as a Research Associate with various Government departments and Private organizations as well, and did some international research projects with well-known organizations like the Asian Development Bank.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Sussex?

For applying for this program, I prepared for IELTS only. It was an easy test and I had a good score on my first attempt. The whole application process was time taking especially writing the statements for the Chevening Scholarship. I think those statements helped in getting the scholarship.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I think it’s because of my statements that I wrote in my application form and during the interview. I had clarity regarding my short-term and long-term goals. I knew what I was applying for and what my next goal was. Being female with two kids,  I was very determined and worked hard. MY work experience was also very relevant to the degree I had applied for

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Nothing, maybe I will try to take things a bit lightly and not worry too much.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I would advise those applying for scholarships like Chevening to have realistic goals and clear direction about their future plans. It’s essential to understand that the purpose of such scholarships is to support individuals who have the potential to create a meaningful impact in their fields and communities. Many applicants mistakenly focus on highlighting financial hardship or personal struggles, but scholarship providers are primarily interested in your vision, leadership potential, and commitment to your goals.

Applicants should also invest time in researching the values and objectives of the scholarship program and align their application accordingly. Consistency between your personal statement, career plans, and leadership experiences is crucial. Another key piece of advice is to show how your academic and professional journey fits into a broader vision for contributing to your country or region.

Lastly, seek feedback from past scholars or mentors, refine your essays thoughtfully, and be authentic; scholarship committees can easily spot when a story is genuine and when it’s exaggerated.
