The Journey

I am Monika Ranabhat, a passionate advocate for public policy and development studies from Pokhara, Nepal. My journey of activism began at a very young age when I founded a child club at the village level, aiming to empower young people and advocate for their rights. This early involvement in social causes paved the way for my continued engagement in various social organizations, significantly influencing my decision to pursue a career in public policy.

I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Governance and Public Policy at the University of Passau in Germany. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from Pokhara University, where I was honored to be the university topper, achieving the highest academic distinction in my program. My academic excellence and commitment to social impact, combined with my professional experiences, have motivated me to further my education and contribute to the fields of policy-making and social justice.

Scholarship Details

I am currently a recipient of the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Program for Public Policy (April 2023-September 2025), which covers my studies at the University of Passau in Germany and accommodation in Germany. This scholarship is a great honor and provides me with the financial support to fully focus on my research and academic work.

The DAAD Helmut-Schmidt-Programme, also known as the Public Policy and Good Governance initiative, is designed to support emerging leaders from developing countries who are committed to advancing democracy and social justice in their home nations. Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, this program offers an opportunity to earn a Master's degree in fields that are particularly significant for the social, political, and economic development of the participants' countries. In alignment with the principles of Good Governance, the program educates highly qualified graduates with an initial academic degree in political science, law, economics, and public administration, equipping them for future leadership roles in their home countries.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor of Development Studies at Pokhara University, Nepal, achieving a remarkable GPA of 3.96. My academic focus was on public policy, gender studies, and sustainable development. My degree laid a solid foundation in both qualitative and quantitative research, policy analysis, and the social sciences. This rigorous academic training not only helped me develop critical thinking skills but also provided the necessary theoretical knowledge to tackle the complex issues in governance and public policy.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for German Universities?

To apply for institutions abroad, I focused on selecting universities with strong public policy programs. I researched various universities, their programs, and their alignment with my career goals. I also consulted mentors and alumni who had experience in these programs. For my master's degree, I specifically sought out institutions that offered a multidisciplinary approach to governance and public policy. The application process involved preparing a comprehensive portfolio, including academic transcripts, recommendation letters (both academic and professional), and a statement of purpose, which highlighted my academic achievements, professional experiences, and aspirations in the field of public policy.

How Did You Prepare for Standardized Tests?

For the standardized exams, such as the IELTS, which I took to meet language proficiency requirements, I followed a structured study plan. I focused on practicing each section of the exam through online resources, mock tests, and practice books. I prepared at home to improve my listening, speaking, and writing skills, ensuring I could demonstrate my proficiency in English. I scored high in all areas, particularly in listening and speaking, which are crucial for my communication-based career.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

When preparing for the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship, I carefully reviewed the scholarship requirements and aligned my personal and academic goals with the scholarship’s values, which emphasize leadership in public policy. I worked closely with my mentors, who helped me craft a strong personal statement and recommendation letters. Additionally, I ensured that my research work and professional experience in public policy were clearly articulated, demonstrating how my background aligns with the scholarship’s mission of fostering future leaders in public service.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application stand out was my deep commitment to public service and my demonstrated academic and professional excellence. My involvement in various research projects, professional experience working at a public policy think tank in Nepal, leadership in youth organizations, and my extensive volunteer work were key aspects of my profile. I also focused on my passion for gender equality and inclusive development, which resonates strongly with the scholarship's objectives. My publications and research work further validated my potential to contribute meaningfully to public policy.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Looking back, I would have started my application process earlier to give myself more time to fine-tune my essays and personal statement. I would have also sought more advice from alumni or current students who have gone through the process, as this would have given me a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to best present my experiences.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice would be to craft your motivation letter carefully. Be honest about your goals, experiences, and aspirations, as authenticity is key to standing out. Take the time to research the scholarship thoroughly and tailor your application to align with its core values and objectives. It's important to start early and ensure that your academic and professional experiences reflect the scholarship’s mission. Confidence in your abilities is vital, so don’t hesitate to highlight your leadership roles and community involvement.
