The Journey
My name is Mohammed Alshilwi, and I am from Libya. I was born in the city of Derna in May 1993. I received my education in the same city at all levels. After finishing high school, I enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine, where I studied for two years, aspiring to become either a paediatrician, a psychiatrist, or a surgeon.
However, due to the civil war and the ongoing instability in Libya, I was forced to leave medical school. After the situation stabilised somewhat, I decided to change my academic path. I joined the Faculty of Science and specialised in geology, graduating with first-class honours.
In 2024, I was awarded the Chevening Scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations at the University of Glasgow.
I decided to apply for this scholarship and choose this field after more than five years of working in humanitarian work, whether with non-governmental organisations or within civil society, particularly in the field of human rights. My work with war survivors - refugees, migrants, internally displaced persons, and asylum seekers, both children and adults - has been, and continues to be, driven by a deep passion and sincere desire to make a difference.
This is where the importance of academic study lies for me. It is a vital step toward improving the quality of my work and deepening my understanding of political issues and relevant policy-making. I believe that studying International Relations at the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow is the ideal choice to achieve these goals.
After completing my studies, I aim to use this academic qualification to serve my community and contribute to the advancement of humanitarian policies grounded in justice and dignity, in order to empower communities affected by conflict to reclaim their rights and build a more stable and equitable future.
Chevening Scholarship Details
Chevening is the UK government’s global awards programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. The programme offers scholarships to outstanding individuals with leadership potential from across the globe, enabling them to pursue postgraduate courses at universities in the UK.
Established in 1983, the Chevening programme has evolved into a prestigious international initiative, drawing scholars from over 160 countries and territories. With a network of over 50,000 alumni worldwide, Chevening boasts an influential and highly esteemed global community.
Educational Background
I graduated with a 3.0 GPA after studying Geology for four years. Geology is a pure science that explores all aspects of the Earth, ranging from geography, rocks, petroleum, oil, and gas to hydrology and the physics of the Earth. My academic background played a vital role in developing my passion for complex topics that require hard work, critical thinking, and a deep level of analysis. While I understand that Geology is quite different from Political Science, there is a meaningful connection between my previous studies, my background in my home country, and what I am currently pursuing in the UK.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Glasgow?
I applied for the Chevening Scholarship and progressed to the interview stage first. Then I applied to universities. I was particularly interested in the University of Glasgow because the course I chose was ranked second in the entire UK. I applied and received a conditional offer, after which I began preparing for the English language test. My approach was simple: practice makes perfect. I focused on familiarising myself with the test format and the techniques required - what to do and what to avoid. I put in extra effort, especially in writing, as it’s academic in nature and something I truly enjoy. Writing is a passion of mine, so I approached it with great enthusiasm.
I used free practice tests and explored the many resources available online, including YouTube and other test-preparation platforms. These helped me understand the structure of the exam and the strategies needed to achieve a high score. In the end, I successfully achieved the score required by the University, which converted my offer into an unconditional one. The same happened with other universities I applied to, but my first choice has always been the University of Glasgow.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
It was a truly enjoyable stage, one that marked the beginning of a long journey with many steps ahead. First, I gathered all the required documents and submitted my references through the system. Then I moved on to what I consider the most important part of the application process: writing the essays. These essays were an opportunity to demonstrate why I am eligible and deserving of such an opportunity. I can’t describe how fulfilling it was to write them - it felt like a moment of deep reflection, looking inward and outward to trace my achievements, progress, and the hard work I’ve put in, both as a university student and as a professional in the humanitarian sector.
Writing the essay was also an opportunity to think about the future - what is needed, what I want to improve, and how this scholarship and studying for a master’s degree in the UK are vital elements in achieving that. It gave me a clearer vision of my goals and how to work toward them. Once I completed my essays, I reviewed my entire application carefully to ensure everything was in order and nothing had been missed - then, I submitted it.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I truly believe my application stood out because it had a clear vision. I was very intentional about what I wanted from the scholarship, and that clarity was reflected in how well-structured and organised my application was. Anyone who read it could see a strong sense of purpose and direction for the future. I also wrote my essays in a story format, which made them more engaging. I remember telling myself while drafting, "This is my story—no one can tell it better than I can." It was my opportunity to share who I am, what I’ve achieved, and what I could accomplish if given the chance.
I was honest and realistic about my goals, including the timeframe needed to achieve them. I believe these elements - authenticity, structure, and a clear vision - are what made my application stand out. It was the first time in my life I had applied for a scholarship, and Chevening was the only one I applied to. To be selected on my first attempt is something I’m deeply grateful for. Even more meaningful is the fact that I am the first person from my city to ever receive this scholarship - I made history, and that’s something I am incredibly proud of.
It was a great honour, but more importantly, it’s a huge responsibility. It motivates me to do my very best and to pave the way for others in my region who are passionate about their dreams and what they want to achieve in the future.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If there’s one thing I would do differently, it would be preparing for the English test—and taking it - much earlier than I did. That’s the only part of the process I would change if I had to go through it again. Starting earlier gives you more time to prepare thoroughly, reduces pressure, and ultimately leads to better results.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
“Practice makes perfect” - that’s the advice I give to anyone pursuing a goal. Believe in yourself and in your abilities, even if your hands are shaking - do it anyway. You may be surprised by the potential and strength that are deeply rooted within you, just waiting for the right opportunity to grow and shine. The Chevening Scholarship is one of those opportunities. Being part of the Chevening community and studying in the UK is a truly life-changing experience - one I highly recommend to any student with ambition and a passion to make a difference.
