The Journey
Hello, my name is Lay Acheadeth, a Cambodian student from Phnom Penh and a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship in the United Kingdom. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Manchester. My obsession with AI began in 2008 after watching Iron Man; I was captivated by how technology could be used to solve real-world problems. After graduating with First-Class Honours from my undergraduate studies, I realized that while developed nations use AI to revolutionize public services, Cambodia still lacks the local human resources to do the same. This realization shaped my goal: to build local AI solutions and cultivate Cambodian tech leaders to ensure our own digital sovereignty.
Chevening Scholarship Details
Chevening is a prestigious UK government scholarship programme that enables outstanding emerging leaders from eligible countries to pursue a one‑year taught master’s degree at any UK university, fully funding their studies so they can focus on academic and professional development. A fully funded Chevening award normally pays full approved tuition fees (with a cap for some high‑cost courses like certain MBAs), provides economy return flights between your home country and the UK, covers your visa application and allows you to bypass the immigration health surcharge, and gives you arrival and departure allowances plus a monthly living stipend that varies depending on whether you study inside or outside London.
Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?
I was also awarded the BINUS world-class scholarship, where I was given the opportunity to pursue Computer Science in Jakarta, Indonesia. The scholarship amount includes full-tuition fee during the 4-year undergraduate year at BINUS University, accommodations, and related visa and health insurance fees.
Educational Background
During my undergrad, I spent 3 years studying computer science at BINUS University, and then I transferred to the University of Nottingham for my final year, where I chose Artificial Intelligence as my specialization and graduated with a First-class honours grade. I would say that my academic background is pretty solid from the get-go, having AI degrees, and pursuing AI again for my master's.
How Did You Find Information About the Chevening Scholarship and the University of Manchester?
The Chevening Scholarship is highly prestigious and well-known in Cambodia. I found information through official channels, including the British Embassy’s social media pages and their website. Regarding the university, I researched institutions that are leaders in the AI field within Europe, which naturally led me to the University of Manchester.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
Regarding the Chevening scholarship, I have prepared for at least 1 year in advance. You must first know how the Chevening application process looks, so you know what to expect at each stage. All this info can be found on the official Chevening website. Secondly, I prepare all the relevant documents I need, such as transcripts, certificates, and other documents, as these will be used during the completion of the application process. Thirdly, I started working on writing the essay (the most competitive parts) 5 months in advance while also practicing interviews and watching a lot of youtube video regarding tips & tricks and so on, and then consolidated all the information and thought critically about how to answer all the essay questions in a way that aligns with Chevening values. For example, Chevening is looking for future leaders, someone who is influential and is meant to become someone who’s a decision maker in their home country, their institution, or their workplace. To answer all of this, I need to collect and journal what I’ve been doing in the past few years and pick one or two experiences that answer just that.
How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?
In Cambodia, the Chevening Scholarship is highly prestigious and widely recognized, so I first encountered it through official British Embassy announcements on social media and their website. However, finding the right institution required a more targeted approach. I used global rankings like QS World University Rankings to identify the top schools for Artificial Intelligence in the UK, which led me to the University of Manchester. To go beyond the brochures, I joined Chevening alumni groups and reached out to former scholars on LinkedIn. This allowed me to gather "on-the-ground" insights about the course rigor and the student support system in Manchester before I even submitted my application.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?
While Chevening no longer requires English proficiency for the scholarship itself, all my university choices, Manchester, Nottingham, and Birmingham, did. To secure my place at Manchester, I needed an IELTS 7.0 with no band lower than 6.5.
To prepare, I treated the exam like a technical project. I focused heavily on mock testing to understand the time constraints of the Reading and Writing modules. I utilized resources like IELTS Liz and Cambridge Practice Papers to identify my weak spots. For the Speaking and Writing sections, I focused on structure and formal vocabulary to ensure I hit the 6.5 minimum in every single category. Because I started this process early, I was able to meet the university's English requirement well before the Chevening deadline, ensuring my application remained "unconditional."
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think my application stood out because it wasn’t just “good grades + interest in AI” — it showed I’ve already been doing the work in the real world, at a level that actually matters.
On the professional side, I’ve been leading AI work at the Ministry of Post and
TeleCommunication (MPTC), where I helped push projects like TranslateKH into real use (10,000+ monthly active users), alongside Khmer OCR and an AI chatbot. That signals two things selection committees care about: I can build, and I can deliver impact, not just prototypes.
On the academic side, my First Class background and AI-focused projects/dissertation showed I have the fundamentals to handle a demanding master’s program. And with publications and evidence of impact-driven engineering roles, my profile looks consistent: strong technical ability, proven execution, and a clear direction for why this scholarship is the logical next step — not a random upgrade.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice is a bit unconventional: stop aiming for perfection on your first try and embrace iteration. Securing a prestigious scholarship is rarely a "one-and-done" event; it’s a process of learning the patterns of what committees value.
I recommend applying for multiple scholarships simultaneously. This does two things: it sharpens your essay-writing skills and helps you identify the "similarities" in what different foundations seek. Once you find a scholarship that aligns perfectly with your specific background—what I call the "scholarship-candidate fit"—that is where you apply your maximum leverage. For me, that leverage was my real-world impact at the Ministry. Instead of just working hard, work strategically: identify your unique strength, find the scholarship that rewards that specific strength, and then refine your narrative until you are the most logical choice for their investment.
