The Journey

My name is Hajrah, and I come from Islamabad, Pakistan. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, during which I developed a strong interest in understanding the complexities of governance, social inequality, and the policies that shape communities. This interest led me to pursue further education in Public Policy and Governance through the prestigious DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship at the University of Passau, Germany.

I chose the Helmut Schmidt Program because it aligns with my desire to work on social and policy issues affecting vulnerable communities, particularly in developing countries. The scholarship’s emphasis on fostering good governance and sustainable development perfectly matched my aspirations to make a positive impact in policy-making and contribute to equitable social change. I saw Public Policy and Governance as the right path to gaining a deeper understanding of how governments and organizations can effectively address critical issues like poverty, climate change, and inequality.

DAAD Scholarship Details

I was awarded the DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship, also known as the Master’s Scholarship for Public Policy and Good Governance, to pursue my Master's degree at the University of Passau in Germany. This scholarship covered my full tuition, living expenses, health insurance, and travel costs over the course of my program. The monthly stipend is 992 Euros. The Helmut Schmidt Scholarship is highly competitive and aims to support future leaders in governance and public policy, which aligns closely with my career aspirations.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from SZABIST University, where I graduated in 2021 earning a place on the Chancellor's Honor Roll and receiving a Silver Medal for my performance. This foundation in social sciences provided me with a broad understanding of subjects like International Relations, Development Studies, and Political Science, which sparked my interest in public policy and governance.

My educational background equipped me with the analytical and interdisciplinary skills necessary for addressing complex social challenges. Courses in political theory, and governance allowed me to understand the multifaceted issues surrounding poverty, inequality, and climate change. This background motivated me to pursue a Master's degree in Governance and Public Policy at the University of Passau, Germany, under the prestigious DAAD Helmut Schmidt Scholarship.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarships and the University of Passau?

To prepare for applying to scholarships and institutions, I conducted thorough research using online resources, such as official scholarship websites, and forums. I primarily relied on information from the DAAD website and similar platforms to understand eligibility criteria, program requirements, and application deadlines.

For language proficiency, I took the IELTS exam, for which I prepared independently. I utilized freely available online materials, including practice tests, instructional videos, and study guides. My approach was to focus on each section—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—systematically, and I practiced consistently to ensure I met the required score for international admissions.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

While applying for the scholarship, I was interning at UNDP Pakistan, where I gained hands-on experience in climate change adaptation and resilience projects. I believe that my internship played a crucial role in making my application stand out, particularly due to the strong recommendation letter I received from my supervisor. This letter highlighted my contributions to climate initiatives, my ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, and my commitment to sustainable development, all of which aligned closely with the values of the scholarship program.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Honestly, there isn’t anything specific that I would change if I were to go through the process again. I believe my approach was effective, and it yielded the desired result. I would, however, continue to adhere to the same preparation strategies and thorough research methods that helped me succeed the first time, while maintaining my dedication and focus throughout the application process.

What Advice Would You Give to Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice for those looking to apply for a similar scholarship is to thoroughly read and understand the application procedure before beginning the process. Familiarize yourself with all the eligibility criteria, required documents, and deadlines to ensure you don’t miss any crucial steps. This preparation will help you plan effectively, gather the necessary materials, and present a strong and organized application. Additionally, take the time to tailor your application to align with the values and objectives of the scholarship, emphasizing your relevant skills and experiences.
