The Journey
My name is Benjamin Labar, and I am from Nigeria. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria, and a Master's degree in Civil Infrastructure Engineering from Széchenyi István University, Győr, Hungary. Coming from a developing country and being passionate about academia, I pursued scholarships to gain international experience and comparative knowledge that I could apply both locally and globally.
Throughout both degree programs, I maintained a GPA above 4.50/5.00 and graduated in the top 1% of my class. My studies included extensive coursework in Structural and Dynamic Engineering, Geotechnical Structures and Technologies, Seismic Design, and Numerical Analysis, which helped me develop strong analytical and technical skills. I also have a solid background in programming and statistical analysis, with proficiency in tools such as Abaqus, C, C++, REXEL, STRATA, OpenSees, Python, and MATLAB. Additionally, I possess excellent communication skills.
Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Details
After graduating with a Bachelor's degree, I felt the need to advance my studies and gain international experience. As a result, I began applying for multiple scholarships for Master's and, in some cases, direct Ph.D. programs. I was privileged to apply for several globally recognized scholarships, including the following:
- Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Program (Master’s level): This is Europe’s most prestigious scholarship program. Although I was granted admission to nearly all the programs I applied for, it was on a self-funded or reduced tuition basis. Due to financial constraints, I was unable to take up these offers.
- Stipendium Hungaricum: This is the Hungarian Government Scholarship awarded based on bilateral agreements between Hungary and other countries. I was fortunate to be accepted and offered a fully funded scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Civil Infrastructure Engineering at Széchenyi István University, Győr.
- Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project: This is the most prestigious scholarship program offered by the Russian Government. I successfully competed for and won this scholarship as well.
Ultimately, I chose to accept the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship due to several factors, including its financial support, accommodation benefits, and the vibrant student environment in Hungary. The scholarship offers full tuition-free education for Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees, a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (approximately EUR 110) to support living expenses for 12 months each year, and either free dormitory accommodation or a monthly contribution of HUF 40,000 (approximately EUR 100) toward housing costs for the entire duration of the program. These provisions significantly ease accommodation challenges and help ensure a stable academic experience.
Educational Background
I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours, graduating with a CGPA of 4.57 out of 5.00. This strong academic foundation not only reflects my dedication and ability to excel but also provides me with a solid grounding in structural analysis, material science, and Civil Infrastructural Engineering, which are key areas relevant to my MSc field.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Széchenyi István University?
Since I was motivated to further my education, I proactively prepared all necessary documents, including my academic transcripts and proof of English proficiency. I also conducted thorough research on how to write compelling Statements of Purpose and Motivation Letters. Additionally, I maintained active communication with former lecturers who supported me with strong letters of recommendation.
Throughout my application process, I ensured that I applied to programs closely aligned with my academic background, as reflected in my transcript. This strategic approach was one of my greatest strengths, allowing me to target courses where I could build on my previous knowledge and make a meaningful contribution.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?
For any scholarship application, the following materials are key factors that significantly enhance your chances of being selected:
- Academic Certificates
- Transcript of Records
- A well-written Motivation Letter or Statement of Purpose
- Recommendation Letters (which can be obtained from your former teachers)
- Proof of English Proficiency
How Is (was) Your Experience at the Széchenyi István University?
My institutional experience was excellent. Meeting scholars from around the world and building lasting global friendships was exactly what I had hoped for. When I arrived in Hungary, I had no existing network and limited communication. I had to travel alone from the capital to a city located about 1 hour and 20 minutes away. I relied on asking for directions and navigating unfamiliar territory on my own. It was not an easy task, especially as someone traveling abroad for the first time.
I arrived at night and was warmly welcomed and assigned a room in the hostel. All the necessary facilities and amenities were in place. Győr quickly became a home away from home. I thoroughly enjoyed the company of my classmates and schoolmates, cooking, eating together, and spending unforgettable nights in the study room working on group assignments.
Academically, Szechenyi Istvan University met all expectations. The learning environment was up to date, with engaging interactions from both the international office and lecturers. I truly enjoyed my stay in Hungary, including the weather, traveling to neighboring countries after exams, swimming, and working during the summer to earn some money.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
All the required documents and my previous academic background were well-prepared and aligned with the application requirements. These documents included Academic Certificates, Transcript of Records, a well-written Motivation Letter or Statement of Purpose, Recommendation Letters (which can be obtained from former teachers), and Proof of English Proficiency.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Nothing too different from my previous statements.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Always apply for a scholarship abroad if you are willing to further your education, make long-lasting global friendships, enhance your CV, and promote your culture and country. Studying abroad remains one of my greatest achievements, as it allowed me to interact on a broader, international level.
Make sure all your application documents are complete and well-prepared. However, don’t hesitate to apply even if some documents are not yet ready; many institutions may still allow you to submit the most essential ones first and request the rest later if they are genuinely interested in your application.
After securing a scholarship, take time to relax and enjoy your new city. Make new friends, and if you are in the Schengen area, travel to other countries to gain more experience. As the saying goes, “Traveling is a part of education.”
