Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa Fellowship (LAWA) were started by Georgetown University Law Center in 1993. Its purpose is to train women lawyers from Africa who will advocate for female rights in their home countries.
Since its founding, this fellowship has supported over 80 students from various countries in Africa. These fellows had the amazing opportunity to study in the world-class law center and make a difference in their home countries after they have graduated.
LAWA is a 14-month program, and the fellows earn Master of Laws (LL.M.) with an emphasis in international women’s rights from Georgetown University Law Center. After they have graduated, they will have an opportunity to engage in challenging work assignments to further their learning.
Scholarship Amount
- Full tuition
Fellowship recipients must be able to provide other expenses such as room, board, and personal expenses. They can either find another fellowship or use their own money to support themselves.

- Bi-weekly seminars where they discuss prominent issues with well-known speakers
- Attend relevant events such as Supreme Court decisions or Congressional Briefings on women’s issue
- Build extended legal networks through meeting prominent people which will help them later in Africa
