Applying for a graduate program at Harvard University, whether a master’s or Ph.D. program, can be an overwhelming task. You need to be aware that the application process varies per study program, which means you need to check the faculty or the school’s webpage to get the details you need like eligibility requirements, deadlines, and scholarship opportunities.

The requirements and application process are practically the same for US citizens/permanent residents and international students. However, an international student should expect that there would be additional steps to accomplish and/or additional documents to acquire.

In this article, we will be listing all the necessary documents and procedures for applying to Harvard University as an international student.

Application Process for Graduate Program

The application procedure (especially the required documents) differs per study program and level. For example, the requirements for engineering studies are much different from the documents needed for medical studies. Take your time to browse the graduate programs offered at Harvard and check if the program offering is in alignment with your undergraduate program.

Though documents may differ, in general, most of the admissions steps are similar to the other. Here’s a step-by-step guide for your reference:

Step 1. Check the Eligibility Requirements of Your Chosen Study Program

Each applicant needs to check the requirements of your chosen program. Once you met all the requirements, check the admission timeline to ensure you are on track to accomplish your next steps. For example, the MS Data Science program has a specific deadline for submitting the documents. Always double-check the date and time of the deadline. Be sure that you are following the US timezone so as not to miss the submission deadline.

Step 2. Inquire if You Need to Take Standardized Tests

Some programs will require students to submit standardized tests. Usually, international students from non-English speaking countries need to provide an English language proficiency certificate. Some would also be required to submit GRE scores. As for the MS Data Science program, there is no need to take the GRE. It is even advised to not submit your scores even if you have one.

Step 3. Create an Account in Harvard’s Applicant Portal

Start your online application by creating an account in the Applicant Portal. Let’s go back to our example in applying for the MS Data Science program. To apply, it will direct you to the Harvard Griffin GSAS portal. Create an account and be sure that all your inputted information is correct.

Step 4. Complete Your Online Application and Apply Early

Apply as early as possible! Completing your online application may take time as it may require you to submit several documents and information you have yet to obtain. Set a timeframe for completing the documents. Once you get hold of all the requirements, upload and thoroughly review your application before hitting the submit button.

As you complete your application, an application fee of $105 is required to be paid. The Harvard application system will only accept credit cards and it does not accept any mode of payment. Also, the application fee is non-refundable, you can ask for a waiver if you are eligible, but you need to answer several questions for them to decide whether to waive the fee or not.

You’ve completed your admission process once you click on the ‘submit’ button! All online applications will be reviewed by the admissions committee and it would take weeks or months for the results to be announced.
