Applying for a graduate program at Harvard University can be overwhelming, especially because applications are managed by individual Harvard schools and programs. This guide focuses on degree programs administered through the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Harvard Griffin GSAS). If your chosen program is housed in another Harvard school, use that school’s admissions page for exact requirements, deadlines, and funding information.

For Harvard Griffin GSAS degree programs, applications become available in September, are submitted through the Applicant Portal, and all supporting materials must be submitted electronically. Core application components are generally similar for domestic and international applicants, but international applicants and non-native English speakers may need additional items, such as English proficiency scores or certified English translations of transcripts.

This article lists the main documents and procedures for applying to Harvard Griffin GSAS as an international student.

Application Process for Graduate Program

The application procedure, especially the required documents, differs by Harvard school, study program, and level. For example, the requirements for engineering programs are different from the requirements for Harvard Medical School programs. Take your time to browse the graduate programs offered at Harvard and check whether your academic background, preparation, and goals match the program.

For Harvard Griffin GSAS, the general admissions steps below are similar across many degree programs, but you should always confirm the latest instructions on your program page:

Step 1. Check the Eligibility Requirements of Your Chosen Study Program

Each applicant should review the requirements of their chosen program. Once you meet the requirements, check the admissions timeline to ensure you are on track to complete the next steps. For example, the SM Data Science program posts its application deadline and degree details on the program page.

Step 2. Inquire if You Need to Take Standardized Tests

Some programs require standardized tests, some make them optional, and others do not accept them. Applicants who are non-native English speakers may need to demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL iBT or IELTS Academic unless they qualify through an undergraduate degree from an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. For Harvard Griffin GSAS, the minimum scores are 80 on the TOEFL iBT or 6.5 on IELTS Academic, although some programs require higher scores. As for the SM Data Science program, GRE scores are not accepted, and applicants should not submit or mention GRE scores in their application materials.

Step 3. Create an Account in Harvard’s Applicant Portal

Start your online application by creating an account in the Applicant Portal. For example, to apply to the SM Data Science program, select “Engineering and Applied Sciences” as your program choice and “SM Data Science” in the area of study menu. Create an account and make sure all information you enter is correct.

Step 4. Complete Your Online Application and Apply Early

Apply as early as possible. Completing your online application may take time because you may need to submit several documents and pieces of information. Set a timeframe for completing the documents. Once you have all the requirements, upload them and thoroughly review your application before submitting it. Harvard Griffin GSAS does not accept mailed materials for degree applications.

All written parts of the Harvard Griffin GSAS application, including the statement of purpose, supplemental materials, short answers, resume/CV, and employment history, must be authored solely by the applicant. Harvard Griffin GSAS does not allow applicants to use a third party or generative AI to create application materials, although using assistance for minor edits or grammar checks is allowed.

As you complete your application, you must pay an application fee of $105. The fee is payable by credit card only; debit cards and other payment methods are not accepted. The application fee is non-refundable. You may request a fee waiver in the Application Fee section of the application, where you will answer several questions to determine eligibility.

After you submit your application, it is forwarded to the program admissions committee for review. Applicants are usually notified by email when a decision is available in the Applicant Portal, normally by March 15.

Application Requirements for Graduate Program

  1. Application and application fee of $105
  2. Online application form
