University of Colorado
The University of Colorado, School of Medicine, is a medical school positioned six miles east of downtown Denver. It belongs to the University of Colorado system, a Colorado-based public university system that comprises four institutions or campuses: the University of Colorado Boulder, the University of Colorado Denver, CU Anschutz Medical Campus, and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The university system began its journey in 1876, while the medical school came into being in 1883. The medical school was situated in Boulder until it moved to Denver in 1924. It is currently situated at the Anschutz Medical Campus, which also houses the University of Colorado’s dental, nursing, pharmacy, and public health schools.
Study Programs at UC Anschutz Medical Campus
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a curriculum that integrates clinical education with basic and humanities education. Each year of the four-year program represents a phase of the curriculum. The first two phases constitute the Essential Core, while the third and fourth phases constitute the Clinical Core. Four threads or longitudinal essential themes are woven through all four phases of the curriculum. These threads are Culturally Effective Medicine; Evidence-Based Medicine and Medical Informatics; Humanities, Ethics, & Professionalism; and Medicine & Society. The curriculum includes the Mentored Scholarly Activity (MSA) program that extends through the four years, providing students with the opportunity to team up with a faculty mentor and take on a project of mutual interest. There’s also the longitudinal curriculum called the Foundations of Doctoring (FDC) that extends through the first three phases. Designed to equip students with the basic clinical skills that a first-rate physician must possess, the FDC focuses on a humanistic approach to medical care. Additionally, students are also provided with the opportunity to participate in Tracks all through the four phases. Three tracks are currently available for students: Research Track, Rural Track, and Global Health Track.
In addition to the MD program, the university also offers a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and master’s programs in Anesthesiology, Physician Assistant Studies, Modern Human Anatomy, and Genetic Counseling. Ph.D. programs are also available here, there are currently 12 Ph.D. granting programs.
