If you’re looking to pursue international studies in Europe, Sweden is an excellent destination to consider. Students may notice that Swedish culture is relatively informal. For example, university professors are commonly addressed by their first names.
Additionally, many people in Sweden speak English well, which can make it easier for international students to adapt. If you’re comparing universities in Sweden, some well-known institutions include Lund University, Uppsala University, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
The term “student visa” is often used informally. However, if you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and plan to pursue a full degree or study in Sweden for more than three months, you will usually need to apply for a residence permit for higher education. If your studies will last less than three months, you may need a Schengen entry visa instead.
New rules for higher-education residence permits apply from June 11, 2026. Before submitting an application, review the latest information from the Swedish Migration Agency.
Steps on Applying for a Swedish Student Visa
Once you understand how much it may cost to study in Sweden and which documents you need to prepare, follow these steps to apply for the permit that applies to your circumstances.
Step 1. Settle Your First Tuition Fee Installment
If you are required to pay tuition fees, you must pay the applicable tuition fee before applying for a residence permit for higher education. Your Swedish higher education institution will notify the Swedish Migration Agency when the payment has been made.
Step 2. Confirm if You Can Enter Sweden Without a Visa
If your studies will last less than three months, check whether citizens of your country need an entry visa to travel to Sweden. You can review the official list of countries whose citizens require an entry visa. If you do not need an entry visa, you can stay in Sweden and study for up to three months without a residence permit or visa.
If you plan to study in Sweden for more than three months, an entry visa is not the main application route. Citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA will usually need a residence permit for higher education, which must generally be issued before traveling to Sweden. Different rules apply to citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland.
Step 3. Check Your Option for Visa Application
If you need a residence permit for higher education, the preferred option is to apply through the Swedish Migration Agency’s e-service. To use the e-service, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid email address, be able to pay the application fee with a Visa or Mastercard payment card, and be able to scan or photograph the required documents.
If you cannot use the e-service, you can submit a paper application through a Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where you live. Not every Swedish embassy or consulate-general handles migration cases, so check the Swedish Migration Agency’s guidance or the Sweden Abroad website before making an appointment.
Step 4. Submit Your Visa Application
When applying online, complete the application through the Swedish Migration Agency’s e-service and upload the required documents. If you cannot apply online, complete the paper application form and submit it at the appropriate Swedish embassy or consulate-general.
In your residence permit application, you will state which Swedish embassy or consulate-general you can visit if the Swedish Migration Agency needs to meet you before making a decision. You may be asked to present your passport, attend an interview, or provide fingerprints and a photograph. In some cases, the agency may offer a digital passport check through an app.
Step 5. Follow Your Visa Application
You can access information about your residence permit application by logging in to My Page on the Swedish Migration Agency website. The agency will contact you if it needs additional information.
If you applied through the e-service, you will receive an email when a decision has been made. If you submitted a paper application, the embassy will contact you. Waiting times vary depending on factors such as whether your application is complete and whether the agency needs additional information. Review the Swedish Migration Agency’s current statistics before making travel plans.
Step 6. Receive Your Passport with a Permit Sticker
A permit sticker is relevant to a short-stay Schengen entry visa. If you receive a residence permit for higher education, you will instead receive a residence permit card as proof that you have permission to live and study in Sweden.
If you need an entry visa to travel to Sweden, you must generally be photographed and fingerprinted at an embassy or consulate-general and wait for your residence permit card before traveling. When entering Sweden, present the residence permit card together with your valid passport. If you do not need an entry visa, you can generally be photographed and fingerprinted after arriving in Sweden.
Documents Needed for Swedish Student Visa Applications
For a residence permit for higher education, prepare the documents that apply to your circumstances. These generally include:
- Clearly legible copies of your valid passport
- An admission decision showing that you have been finally admitted to full-time, on-site studies in Sweden
- Documents showing that you meet the financial maintenance requirement
- Documents showing that you have or have applied for comprehensive health insurance, if your studies will last less than one year and you are not listed in Sweden’s population register
- Certified translations and copies of the original documents if any supporting documents are not in Swedish or English
- Additional documents if family members are applying with you
The Swedish Migration Agency may request additional information depending on your circumstances. Review its current higher-education residence permit guidance before submitting your application.

For a residence permit for higher education, the application fee is SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children under 18.
