Slovakia is one of the Schengen countries where you can pursue higher education. Slovak higher education institutions offer bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs, and many programs are available in English and other foreign languages. If you want to learn Slovak, you can also look into Slovak language courses offered by universities, private language schools, and Slovak language centers.
Besides your personal and academic growth, studying in Slovakia can also help you build independence, cross-cultural experience, and practical skills that may improve your career prospects.
If you’re ready to start your international studies, here’s how to get the right visa and residence permission for studying in Slovakia.
Steps on Applying for a Slovakia Student Visa
Step 1. Confirm if You Need a Visa to Enter Slovakia
If you’re from an EU or EEA country, or Switzerland, you don’t need a visa to enter Slovakia. You can enter with a valid passport or national ID card. Within 10 working days after arriving in Slovakia, you must report the beginning and place of your stay to the Foreign Police, unless your accommodation provider, such as a hotel or dormitory, does it for you. If you plan to stay for more than three months, you must register your right of residence within 30 days after the first three months of your stay have passed.
If you’re from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, your visa requirement depends on your nationality and how long you will stay. For short stays of up to 90 days, you may need a Schengen visa unless you are visa-exempt. For degree studies or other studies lasting more than 90 days, you will usually need temporary residence for the purpose of study. Some students apply for a national visa, also known as a type D visa, so they can enter Slovakia and apply for temporary residence there, while others apply for temporary residence through a Slovak embassy before traveling.
Step 2. Get Your Documents Ready
After confirming which route applies to you, start preparing your application documents. Contact the Slovak embassy, consulate, or authorized visa application center responsible for your country of residence to confirm the exact requirements. Requirements can vary depending on whether you are applying for a Schengen visa, a national visa, or temporary residence for the purpose of study.
In some locations, national visa applications may be submitted through an external service provider designated by the Slovak Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. You can get the national visa application form here.
Step 3. Prepare for an Appointment
You can check the list of Slovak diplomatic missions abroad here and set up an appointment to submit your application. You can also check whether your country has an authorized visa application center. Some diplomatic missions and visa application centers require an appointment for visa applications.
For example, in the United Arab Emirates, Slovakia lists authorized visa centers such as BLS International and VFS Global for visa applications, while residence permit applications must be submitted at the Slovak Embassy. Always follow the instructions of the office responsible for your country.
During your appointment, follow the security rules of the embassy, consulate, or visa application center. Check the accepted payment method in advance so you can pay the application fee correctly and avoid delays.
Step 4. Processing Period
Start preparing early, but remember that some supporting documents for temporary residence, such as proof of purpose, financial documents, and criminal record documents, generally cannot be older than 90 days on the day you submit your application.
For national visas, Slovak diplomatic missions generally decide within 30 days after receiving the application, although a national visa may be granted only after the Ministry of Interior gives prior consent. For temporary residence for the purpose of study, the Foreign Police currently decides on complete applications within 30 days. A legislative change effective July 15, 2026, extends the decision period for granting or renewing temporary residence for the purpose of study to 90 days, so students should check the latest instructions before applying.
Step 5. Get Your Visa and Apply for a Temporary Residence Permit
Once you get your visa, you can travel to Slovakia for your studies. However, a national visa does not automatically let you stay for your entire degree program. A national visa issued so you can submit a residence permit application in Slovakia is issued for 120 days, while national visas in general may be issued for a maximum validity of one year. If your studies will continue beyond your visa validity, apply for temporary residence for the purpose of study during the validity of your visa or before arrival through the Slovak embassy, depending on your situation.
Temporary residence for the purpose of study is granted for the expected duration of your studies, up to a maximum of six years. It can be renewed if your study purpose continues. Students who complete university studies in Slovakia may also be able to renew their temporary residence for nine months to look for a job or start a business.
To apply for temporary residence for the purpose of study, prepare the following documents and submit them to the Slovak embassy or, if you are eligible to apply from within Slovakia, to the competent Foreign Police Department:
- Completed official application form in Slovak
- Two recent full-face color photos, 3 × 3.5 cm
- Valid passport
- Document proving the purpose of your stay, such as a university admission letter, confirmation of studies, or scholarship/mobility program confirmation
- Proof of sufficient financial resources, such as a bank statement, scholarship award letter, confirmation of financial coverage, or a sponsor’s affidavit with the sponsor’s bank statement
- Criminal record extract from your country of origin and, where required, from countries where you stayed for more than 90 days during six consecutive months in the last three years
- Official translations and apostille or superlegalization for foreign documents, where required
- Proof of administrative fee payment, where applicable
Students who will study at a Slovak higher education institution do not need to submit confirmation of accommodation for temporary residence for the purpose of study.
After your temporary residence is granted, you must enter Slovakia within 180 days. Within three working days of arriving, report the beginning of your stay to the Foreign Police. Within three working days of receiving your residence card, you must take out health insurance if you do not already have it. Within 30 days of receiving the residence card, you must submit proof of health insurance and a medical certificate, not older than 30 days, confirming that you do not suffer from a disease that could endanger public health.
Documents Needed for Slovakia Student Visa Applications
The following requirements apply when you need to apply for a national visa, also called a type D visa, for Slovakia. Exact requirements depend on the purpose of the national visa and the instructions of the Slovak embassy or authorized visa center.
- Completed national visa application form
- Valid travel document or passport, valid for at least 90 days after the intended date of departure from Slovakia
- Recent full-face color photo, usually 3 × 3.5 cm
- Document confirming the purpose of stay, such as an acceptance letter or certificate of study
- Proof of health insurance for at least the period required for your visa category
- For some national visa routes, documents connected to your temporary residence application, proof of financial means, and a document showing your date and means of transport to Slovakia
If you are applying for a national visa under Slovakia’s Higher Education Internationalisation Strategy, you will generally need a valid passport, completed national visa application form, 3 × 3.5 cm photo, certificate of study or acceptance letter from the relevant educational institution, and proof of health insurance valid for at least 30 days from your planned entry into Slovakia.
Most degree-seeking students will also need temporary residence for the purpose of study if they will stay in Slovakia for more than 90 days. Prepare the temporary residence documents listed above, and check the Slovak embassy’s instructions before booking an appointment.
