The Journey
Hi! My name is Zhibek, and I’m from Kyrgyzstan. I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in International Relations at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest, Hungary.
Volunteering has been a big part of my life. It's where I discovered the value of communication between people from different cultures, organizations, and governments. That experience led me to International Relations, a field I believe can bridge differences and create solutions for a more cooperative and inclusive future.
I received the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship to study at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE). This scholarship is offered by the Hungarian government and covers full tuition, health insurance, and provides a monthly stipend of up to 220 euros.
It’s open to students from over 90 countries and can be used at 27 Hungarian universities. The program’s goal is to promote diversity and cultural exchange while offering a high-quality education in Hungary.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
I was offered a 40% merit scholarship at Stetson University in the U.S., but I chose to accept the fully funded Stipendium Hungaricum opportunity.
I graduated from Bishkek International School (BIS) with a dual diploma - an American High School Diploma and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
The IB program gave me a solid academic foundation and critical thinking skills, which helped me transition smoothly into university life. The subject choices I made, like Geography HL, which focused on global issues and globalization, aligned closely with what I’m studying now at ELTE. My cumulative GPA at BIS was 3.93 out of 4.
Before BIS, I studied at Secondary School No. 13 in Bishkek, where I developed strong English skills thanks to its language-focused curriculum.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Eötvös Loránd University?
I started by researching online. The official Stipendium Hungaricum website was very helpful, and I also watched YouTube videos made by past scholars. My school counselor also hosted info sessions that guided me through the process, but the majority of the details I gathered through self-research.
I took both the IELTS and the SAT. I initially attended a short IELTS course at the British Council in Bishkek. But since I took the actual exam about four years later, I mostly prepared on my own using online resources. I dedicated time every day to practice and review. Practice exams were quite helpful and highly recommended.
For the SAT, I also self-studied using past papers and online practice exams. Studying in an English-speaking school helped a lot as well.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship?
The Stipendium Hungaricum application process has two stages: one through your home country’s government or sending partner, and the second through Tempus Public Foundation in Hungary.
For the first stage, I gathered my academic documents, medical records, English proficiency certificate, recommendation letters, and other certificates.
For the second stage, I wrote a Motivation Letter, filled in personal details about my hobbies and interests, and uploaded all my documents to the online portal.
How Is/Was Your Experience at Eötvös Loránd University?
My experience at ELTE has been mostly positive. The academic quality is strong, professors are supportive and knowledgeable, and the course topics are relevant and engaging.
I’m also involved in student communities like the International Relations Society and Culture Club. However, I would love to see more community engagement and student-led events. This is something I was very used to during my high school years and through volunteering.
How Do You Rate Eötvös Loránd University Academically and Why?
Academically, ELTE is strong. The curriculum in International Relations is thoughtfully structured, giving students a solid foundation in theory and practice. Most professors are highly experienced and passionate about their fields, which makes learning more dynamic and meaningful.
How Does Eötvös Loránd University Support International Students?
There are helpful services like the International Office, Student Council, and Mentorship Programs. If you reach out, most of the time you’ll find what you need. However, I do feel that some information circulates more easily within the Hungarian-speaking student community, so international students need to be a bit proactive.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English?
Yes, all of my classes are conducted in English.
Would Students Face Academic Problems Not Knowing the Native Language?
Not really. If your program is in English, you’ll be fine academically. As for daily life, Budapest is very international, and most people speak English, especially in the city center. You can definitely manage without knowing Hungarian, though learning a few basics helps!
What Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think it was the combination of my passion, experience, and consistency.
I’ve been involved in volunteering for nearly 6 years, starting in 2019. I worked with Rotary International, eventually founding the first volunteering club at my international high school.
On top of that, I’ve been a Kyrgyz folk dancer for 13 years, representing my country in over 15 international festivals. These activities showed my diversity and dedication, and I think they helped my application feel more personal and multidimensional.
Academically, I maintained strong grades and had very supportive recommendation letters from my school principal and department head.
What Would You Have Done Differently?
Looking back, I would have spent more time writing a stronger Motivation Letter - something that really reflects my personality and ambitions. I believe I had the right experiences and values, but I could have done a better job of bringing that out on paper.
Also, I would tell my past self to relax more and enjoy the process. These applications are a journey in themselves, and no matter the outcome, they teach you a lot.
What Advice Would You Give to Future Applicants?
Go into the process with curiosity and excitement. The fact that you're applying already means you're taking a big step toward your dreams.
Be honest and show the best version of yourself - through your motivation letter, through your academic and personal journey, and through your future goals.
And of course, stay organized and consistent. Whether it’s test prep or document collection, a little progress every day goes a long way.
But most importantly, enjoy the journey. Scholarships aren’t just about funding, they’re about growth, connection, and discovering who you are.
