The Journey
My name is Yasmeen Syavira Nawangwulan, and I’m from Indonesia. I graduated with a Diploma in Korean Language from Gadjah Mada University (UGM). I am proud to be a GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Awardee for the Exchange Program at Kangwon National University in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, South Korea.
My interest in the Korean language began in junior high school when I started self-learning through Korean variety shows, dramas, and movies. As my curiosity deepened, I knew I wanted to pursue Korean studies in a more formal academic setting. In senior high school, I applied to UGM’s Korean Language program through a report-based university admission system known as PBUSMAK, which allowed me to gain entry without a written test, based solely on academic performance.
During my studies at KNU, I was exposed to not only the Korean language but also Korean culture, literature, politics, and society. I realized that Korean is becoming an increasingly influential global language, and mastering it could open meaningful international and professional opportunities. In my sixth semester, I was fortunate to be selected for the Fall Semester GKS-funded exchange program, which became a defining chapter in my academic and personal journey.
Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Scholarship Details
I received the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) offered by the South Korean government to foster international educational exchange. Through this scholarship, I was able to spend one semester at Kangwon National University majoring in Korean Language and Literature. The scholarship covered tuition, round-trip airfare, a monthly living allowance, and settlement funds, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and cultural immersion during my time in Korea.
During my exchange, I deepened my understanding of the Korean language through advanced classes in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I also took courses in Korean linguistics and traditional literature, which gave me greater insight into how language reflects cultural and historical contexts. Beyond language, I had the opportunity to learn directly from native professors, interact with local students, and experience daily life in Korea, making my education not only academic but also deeply immersive and personal.
Educational Background
I earned a Diploma in Korean Language from Gadjah Mada University, one of the leading universities in Indonesia, and graduated in 2022 with a GPA of 3.79 out of 4.00. My coursework was rich and diverse, covering not only language instruction but also topics like Korean literature, linguistics, history, and current affairs. This academic foundation equipped me with the skills and cultural understanding necessary to thrive in an international environment like Korea.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Kangwon National University?
I learned about the exchange program through UGM’s Office of International Affairs (OIA), which has a formal partnership with Kangwon National University. These exchange opportunities are offered regularly every Spring and Fall semester. I applied for the Fall Semester during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when fewer students were applying for overseas programs. After going through an internal selection process at UGM, I was fortunate to be chosen as one of the scholarship recipients.
As part of the requirements, I took the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) and achieved Level 4, which met the scholarship’s language requirement. I also took the TOEFL, although it wasn’t mandatory if a valid TOPIK score was submitted. Preparing for these exams required dedication and discipline—I studied grammar, vocabulary, and practiced with mock tests while also immersing myself in Korean media to strengthen my listening and reading skills. These efforts significantly improved my language proficiency and gave me confidence to study in Korea.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Global Korea Scholarship?
To prepare for the GKS application, I collected all required documents carefully and ensured they were complete and well-presented. This included writing a compelling personal statement and a detailed study plan, securing a recommendation letter from one of my lecturers, and preparing academic records such as my transcript and certificates. I also handled the administrative side—applying for a visa, completing a medical check-up, and preparing my passport and proof of enrollment. I took extra care in expressing my genuine motivation and goals in my essays, refining them several times with input from mentors and past awardees. Constant communication with UGM’s Office of International Affairs helped me stay on track throughout the process.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe what made my application stand out was my long-standing passion and consistent effort in studying the Korean language—even before entering university. My self-taught background, combined with strong academic performance and a sincere desire to learn about Korean culture, helped shape a personal statement that truly reflected who I am. I wasn’t just applying for an opportunity—I had been preparing for it for years, and I think that level of commitment was evident in every part of my application.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were to go through the process again, I would definitely start preparing earlier, especially for the language proficiency tests. I would also try to connect more with previous scholarship awardees to gain insights into their experiences and learn from their journeys. Being well-prepared not only improves your chances of success but also helps you make the most of the experience once you arrive in a new country.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice to anyone considering the GKS or any international scholarship is simple: believe in yourself and start early. Do thorough research on the scholarship requirements, prepare your documents in advance, and take the time to craft a sincere personal statement. Don’t underestimate the power of being genuine—let your motivation and personality shine through. Make use of your university’s resources, and if possible, connect with alumni for guidance. Most importantly, don’t be discouraged by the competition. If you’re passionate, prepared, and willing to take the leap, great things can happen.
