The Journey
I am Vishnupriya. I hail from a small village in Kerala, India. Growing up in the lush green Western Ghats, I always felt a deep connection with nature. A school nature camp sparked my interest in forestry, leading me to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Forestry in India. During the pandemic, I began exploring international scholarship opportunities and was fortunate to be selected for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Mediterranean Forestry and Natural Resources Management (MEDfOR), a program spanning seven universities across four countries. I studied in Spain, Italy, and completed my thesis in Portugal, with full funding from the European Union. After my Master’s, I returned to India and am currently working in urban ecology, focusing on bats.
Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Details
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree (EMJMD) is a prestigious international scholarship program funded by the European Union, offering integrated Master's courses delivered jointly by a consortium of at least three higher education institutions from different countries, along with multiple academic and industry partners.
I was awarded the Erasmus Mundus scholarship for the MEDfOR (Mediterranean Forestry and Natural Resources Management) program, which included partner universities in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Turkey. I did my first year at the University of Lleida, Spain, and moved to Italy, the University of Padova, for my specialisation. I did my final master’s thesis at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. For my summer internship after the first year, I spent two months in CTFC Solsona, and the MEDfOR program also had a winter school at the University of Valladolid, Spain, and a Summer school at the Alp mountains organised by the University of Tuscia, Italy.
The scholarship, valued at €49,000, fully funded my two-year Master's degree, covering tuition fees, a monthly living stipend of €1,000, annual travel allowances, health insurance, and an installation grant during the first year, Summer school, and Winter school.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Forestry with a CGPA of 8.49, earning 160 academic credits. This strong academic record significantly boosted my chances of securing a scholarship. Many international Master’s programs require applicants to have completed between 160 to 180 credits, while most undergraduate programs in India typically offer fewer than 160. Having fulfilled the credit requirement, along with my active involvement in extracurricular activities, academic internships, and various workshops, helped make my CV stand out during the selection process.
How Did You Find Information About the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and Institutions?
Everything from the internet. I spend hours every day searching for scholarships, institutions, and application procedures. Looked up all the institutional websites, internal scholarship details, and course curricula. Once I knew what I was applying for, I was able to narrow down my search to the MEDfOR consortium, previous scholarship holders, partner universities, and so all.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I prepared for the IELTS with the help of a friend who was a former IELTS instructor, along with free resources on YouTube, and scored a 7.5 band. I highly recommend taking the IELTS or any standardized language/competitive exam, even if the institution accepts a Medium of Instruction certificate (if your education was in English). In cases where candidates have similar academic scores, having a valid IELTS score can make a crucial difference in selection.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
The first step I took in applying for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship was to thoroughly explore the official website and course catalogue. I spent time understanding the variety of programs offered, their eligibility criteria, and the specific application procedures. Each course, depending on its consortium of universities, had its own set of requirements and documentation.
Once I finalised the program I wanted to apply for, I dedicated significant effort to crafting a strong CV and a tailored motivation letter that aligned closely with the course objectives. To strengthen my profile, I completed online courses, attended webinars, and participated in relevant workshops, all of which helped enhance my application and demonstrate my commitment to the field.
How Is (Was) Your Experience at the Institution?
I had a truly enriching experience at all three universities I attended through the program. Being an Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder made a significant difference; it felt like being part of a vibrant and supportive global community. The universities offered more than just academics: there were language programs, cultural events, and regular gatherings that helped us connect and feel at home. Experiencing something so new and different became all the more special with the constant encouragement and support from fellow scholars and the Erasmus network.
How Do You Rate the Institution Academically and Why?
All three institutions I studied at were top-tier and offered excellent academic environments. However, I felt that the course I pursued was somewhat broad in scope for a master’s level program.
How Does the Institution Support International Students?
All the universities I attended had highly efficient international relations teams that provided invaluable support to incoming international students. From visa applications and housing assistance to residence permits and university formalities, their guidance made the transition smooth and stress-free.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or the Country’s Native Language?
All subjects had classes conducted in English. Also, introductory courses in the respective native languages were organised by the universities.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing the Native Language of the Country?
Not really. However, understanding English with a very strong accent can be difficult in the initial days.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I came from an academic background that was directly aligned with the master’s program I applied for. To further strengthen my profile, I completed additional online courses to boost my credit count. Attending conferences, seminars, and earning relevant certifications also significantly enhanced my chances of selection.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
In hindsight, I would have reached out to alumni who had already completed the course to gain deeper insights into the course structure and potential career pathways. This could have helped me make more informed decisions, particularly in selecting my mobility options in a more structured and strategic manner.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
Explore all the options available; there are countless scholarships offered by universities across the world. Never underestimate yourself or hesitate to apply; you’ll never know what you’re capable of unless you try. I found international universities to be far more approachable and student-friendly compared to what I was used to back home. Even if you have the smallest doubt, don’t hesitate to write an email, someone will almost always respond. Today, there’s a wealth of resources available online. Make the most of them, connect with people who’ve walked this path before you, and give it your best shot.
