The Journey

Tessia Boateng, affectionately known as AmaTess among family and close friends, is a young Ghanaian professional with a growing passion for forestry and climate-related work. I recently completed a three-year distance learning MSc in Tropical Forestry at Bangor University in Wales.

Interestingly, forestry was not part of my career plan. A decade ago, I would have doubted anyone who suggested I would build a career in this field. However, as I often reflect, “Forestry found me, and I chose to follow it.” This unexpected journey has shaped my academic and professional path, ultimately inspiring me to pursue advanced studies in Tropical Forestry.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship Details

I received the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship to study Tropical Forestry at Bangor University. The scholarship covers Tuition, an annual stipend for data purchase, and a fully expense-paid trip to a tropical country for a field visit.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geography and Resource Development, graduating with a GPA of 3.4. This academic background provided a strong foundation for my postgraduate studies, as it aligned closely with the requirements for admission into the MSc programme. Beyond my academic qualifications, my professional experience played a critical role in strengthening my application. As a recipient of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) support, my ongoing work in the field was a key factor, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to building capacity in individuals whose careers directly contribute to sustainable development.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Bangor University?

Interestingly, my Manager sent me the email for the scholarship application, but its is available online periodically on the CSC website. A soothing part of the CSC application for Commonwealth countries is the exemption from writing an English Test; you only need to provide evidence that your degree was taught in English.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship?

I read and understood the requirements. I applied to Bangor University for admission first and then used the application letter to apply for the scholarship.

I engaged with Referees early, gave them enough time, and I prayed to be selected since it’s a keen competition.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

For me, I believe it was my line of work and my willingness to utilize the knowledge in the country.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Nothing!

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Prepare early, research, engage with people who have undergone the process – both successfully and unsuccessfully, and believe in yourself. I know someone who applied three times before getting in, so keep up a good spirit, and you will definitely BE FINE.
