The Journey

My name is Talha Ali, and I’m from Pakistan. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Politics and Economics from the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). My academic and professional journey has always been deeply rooted in a passion for social justice, governance, and development. This drive led me to pursue a Master’s in Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego, where I’m currently studying as a Fulbright scholar.

Fulbright Scholarship Details

I was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, which fully funds my graduate studies in the United States, covering tuition, living expenses, health insurance, and travel. The scholarship is administered by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and is one of the most competitive international scholarship programs. It aligned perfectly with my academic goals and commitment to social impact.

Educational Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Politics and Economics at LUMS, a program that laid a strong interdisciplinary foundation for my interests in peacebuilding, policy, and socioeconomic development. My coursework in political economy, public policy, and conflict studies helped shape my worldview and inspired my desire to pursue further education in peace and justice.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of San Diego?

I began researching graduate programs that aligned with my focus on conflict resolution, transitional justice, and sustainable peace. I prioritized universities with strong faculty in peace studies and access to hands-on learning opportunities. I found most of the information through university websites, graduate school rankings, and networking with current students and alumni. The University of San Diego stood out for its blend of academic rigor and practical engagement with global peacebuilding initiatives.

For the Fulbright application, I was required to take the GRE. I prepared using resources like Magoosh, ETS PowerPrep, and study groups with other applicants. While balancing full-time work was challenging, consistent study sessions and practice tests helped me achieve a competitive score.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

The Fulbright application process is comprehensive, requiring strong personal statements, academic transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of recommendation. I spent several weeks crafting and refining my personal statement to reflect not just my academic achievements, but also my vision for how I plan to contribute to peacebuilding in Pakistan. I sought feedback from mentors and Fulbright alumni, which helped me strengthen my narrative and align it with Fulbright’s mission.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of the clear and consistent trajectory between my academic background, four years of professional experience in the peace and development sector, and my long-term commitment to creating impact in Pakistan. I was able to show both leadership and community engagement, and I highlighted specific projects I had led or contributed to, such as grassroots peace initiatives and youth civic engagement programs.

What Would You Have Done Differently?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start preparing my GRE and essays even earlier. I’d also try to connect with even more alumni before finalizing my university choices, as their insights are incredibly valuable in understanding what each program really offers beyond what’s on paper.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Take your time with the application, especially the personal statement. Be honest, reflective, and specific. Don’t be afraid to show vulnerability, but make sure it’s tied to growth and purpose. Also, leverage your network—talk to alumni, attend USEFP info sessions, and don’t hesitate to ask for feedback. Most importantly, believe in your story and the impact you want to make.
