The Journey

I’m Sung Hyun Lee. I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Psychology at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana. I’m also an ordained pastor in the Korean Methodist Church. As it explains, I am originally from South Korea and have been in the US over 15 years now.

Association of American University Women Scholarship Details

I won the International Fellowship from the Association of American University Women in 2015-2016 (Academic year) for my PhD, and the fellowship amount was $20,000.

Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?

I was also offered an International Ambassadorial Scholar by the International Rotary in 2008-2009 for my Master's, and the fellowship amount was $25,000.

Educational Background

I obtained a Master of Theological Studies from Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, and a PhD from Drew University, Madison, NJ. Before coming to the US, I was already holding a Master of Theology and Bachelor of Theology in South Korea, which prepared me for my future pursuit of degrees. My GPA was mostly high in the US. People in academia generally expect students who want to pursue a doctorate in theology or religious studies to have a GPA higher than 3.6 to 3.7 out of 4.0. This is a “general” understanding; thus, this may not apply to every case seeking a doctorate in the field, but this will offer a basic idea.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to U.S. Instittuions?

I worked hard to improve my language skills in English since my mother tongue is Korean. When I say “hard,” I really mean “hard.” Additionally, I was strategic and practical in learning the language. Without fluent language skills, it’s hard to show your gifts and abilities effectively. Of course, your academic skills will be essential.

How Did You Find Information About Scholarships and Institutions?

I learned about the scholarships through my personal network.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests?

Yes and for any language tests, getting yourself familiarized with the language itself was the most effective way for me to be prepared for the tests rather than technically memorizing words and facts.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Scholarships?

I studied the institutions and their intention and cause for the particular scholarship I applied for. Understanding the nature and raison d'être of the institution is most important before you start writing your application. Constant revision of the application until you think it’s clear and professional was the second strategy.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would extend my social and professional network through the institutions while I was part of the institution through the fellowships.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Connect your stories to the institution’s raison d'être. Make it very clear and powerful. Only in that way will the institution pay attention to your story.
