My name is Shokhrukh Avazov, originally from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. I have a strong academic and professional background in international development, public administration, and climate resilience. I pursued my Master’s degree in Development Policy at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management and later earned a Doctoral degree in Public Administration from Yonsei University in South Korea. I was honored to receive the KDI School of Public Policy and Management Scholarship for my Master’s studies and the Yonsei University Foreign Students’ and BK21 Research Scholarship for my doctoral program. These scholarships covered full tuition and living expenses, enabling me to focus entirely on my academic and research pursuits. The total amount of both scholarships was more than 75000 USD.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the IELTS to demonstrate English proficiency back in 2013 and received 6.5. I prepared to go for tutoring classes and practice tests, focusing on academic vocabulary and listening skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to both Scholarships?

I carefully reviewed the scholarship criteria and aligned my application with their goals. I emphasized my government work experience, volunteer work, research experience, and commitment to public service. I also sought feedback from mentors and peers to refine my essays and CV.

How was Your Experience at Yonsei University and KDI School?

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean? 

All my classes were conducted in English, which made it accessible for international students.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically, Not Knowing Korean?

Not necessarily. While knowing Korean helps with daily life, academic success is not hindered if students are proficient in English.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my combination of academic excellence, professional experience in development, and commitment to public service made my application compelling. My publications and volunteer work also demonstrated a strong alignment with the scholarship’s mission.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have started preparing earlier, especially for standardized tests and recommendation letters. I also would have reached out to current students for insights into the programs.
