Scholarship: Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree – Fully Funded

The Journey
Hi! My name is Sharveri Khapre, and I’m currently pursuing my Joint Master's in Neurobiology and Medical Neuroscience through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree Scholarship in Neuroscience called Neurasmus. I am originally from Mumbai, India, and I have always been passionate about research, specifically in the context of neuroscience. Through Neurasmus, I have the incredible opportunity to study in two European countries: Portugal and Germany. This experience has not only sharpened me academically but also enriched me culturally and personally!
Educational Background
Before joining Neurasmus, I completed my Bachelor's in Biotechnology with a CGPA of 9.91/10 and topped my class. My undergrad experience provided a solid foundation in biological sciences and research methodologies. I was also simultaneously a part of Scienspur, which is a Harvard University-Lakshi Mittal funded program that further builds upon my scientific knowledge and interpersonal skills. After my bachelor's, I took up research internships in various institutes in India like ACTREC and IISc, which gave me clarity about my interest in neuroscience and also prepared me well for the interdisciplinary and multicultural nature of the EMJM Neurasmus program!
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
I started by researching the programs that aligned with my interests in Neuroscience. I was particularly interested in a research-oriented program. I carefully reviewed the curriculum and research opportunities offered by each program. I reached out to alumni, specifically on LinkedIn, to get an in-depth understanding of the program and its application requirements. I also joined the Neurasmus group on Facebook, where applicants could contact one another and talk to current students and alumni.
I did explore other scholarships, including DAAD and PhD studentships like MRD-DTP, but Erasmus Mundus stood out to me because of the multi-country experience and the full funding it offers, along with benefits such as travel grants and insurance. I tailored my Statement of Purpose for the program, focusing on how my academic background and goals aligned with the program’s vision, and how that would be beneficial for my career as a researcher.
The competition was intense- Neurasmus is very selective. The selection committee receives around 800 applications each year for the 15-20 scholarships that are awarded.
I believe what made my application stand out was a combination of strong academic performance, a clear and focused Statement of Purpose, and relevant research experience. I think what helped me the most was that my passion for Neuroscience research was evident throughout my application.
Could You Briefly Discuss the Erasmus Mundus Program You Pursued and the Specific Field of Study It Focused On?
The EMJM program I am a part of focuses on preparing students for a career in neuroscience and research. There are six tracks, and depending on the one you are assigned, you can specialize in topics such as clinical and translational neuroscience, molecular and cellular neurobiology, and neurophysiology, in addition to gaining fundamental knowledge of the field. I was assigned track no. 5, starting in Portugal, where we learned fundamentals in neuroscience and focused on molecular and cellular neurobiology. I will be starting my second year in Berlin, where I will be able to build upon my knowledge through a clinical and translational perspective.
How Did the Cost of Living Vary Across the Countries You Studied In? Which Country Was the Most Affordable or Expensive, and How Did You Manage Financially?
The cost of living varied between Portugal and Germany. For instance, the rent in Portugal was 100-150 EUR less than in Germany. The scholarship covered my travel and stipend, which helped me navigate my daily expenses and pay my rent and utilities, though budgeting wisely was still essential, especially when living in more expensive cities.
Did You Face Any Language Barriers, and if So, How Did You Overcome Them? Did the Language of Instruction Change From One Country to Another?
The language of instruction for the program across all universities is English, so academically, I did not face any issues. However, day-to-day interactions are tricky, especially when you start out. Simple tasks such as grocery shopping or asking for directions can seem overwhelming. Thankfully, the universities I am a part of in Portugal and Germany offer beginner-level lessons in Portuguese and German. Being proactive and using apps such as Duolingo also greatly helps in managing day-to-day activities. Another efficient and fun way to grasp a language is to make friends with the local students and strike up conversations, you will learn the words eventually!
Would You Recommend the Erasmus Mundus Program to Others? What Advice Would You Give to Someone Considering This Scholarship?
Absolutely! EMJM Neurasmus has been one of the most enriching academic experiences I have had. It offers top-quality education, cultural immersion, and a chance to build a global network. For anyone passionate about their field and looking for an international perspective, I would wholeheartedly recommend Erasmus Mundus.
My advice: Start early, do thorough research on the programs you want to apply to, and be authentic in your application. Showcase not just your academic achievements but also your adaptability, passion, and goals. Make sure your Statement of Purpose reflects your story, your ‘why’, and how the program you are applying to is your ‘how’.
Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?
Looking back on my first year in Portugal, I am really happy with how things turned out. I made amazing friends from all around the world and made great connections with my peers. However, for my second year in Berlin, I would like to explore and travel more. It’s easy to get caught up in studies and internships, but travelling and exploring, alone or with your friends, adds a whole other layer to the Erasmus Mundus experience. I would also like to document my journey more, not just for memories, but also to help and inspire future applicants!
