The Journey
My name is Sayed Ahmad Fahim Masoumi, and I am from Afghanistan. I hold a Master's degree in Sustainable Development Management from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Germany. I earned my Bachelor's degree in International Relations from Aburayhan University in Afghanistan.
Early in my academic journey, I became passionate about sustainable development and international cooperation. This led me to work with AIESEC, the world’s largest youth-led organization, where I helped empower young people to tackle global challenges aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). After gaining several years of professional experience in development and project management, I realized the need to deepen my theoretical understanding and practical tools, which guided me toward pursuing a Master’s degree. The MA Sustainable Development Management program matched perfectly with my career vision.
The MA Sustainable Development Management program provided a well-rounded and career-oriented curriculum. Courses such as Development Theories & Policies, Development Economics, and Macro Economics in LDCs gave me a strong foundation to understand the complexities of global development systems. Modules like Management of Development Projects and Impact Evaluation directly enhanced my ability to design, implement, and assess development interventions effectively. I also gained valuable skills through Management of Non-Profit Organisations & Fundraising, Diversity Management & Negotiation Skills, and International Law & Compliance, which are highly relevant to my work with NGOs and international stakeholders. Furthermore, practical components like Data Collection & Analysis, the Applied Project, and my Master Thesis helped bridge theory with hands-on experience. Supplementary courses in International Economics, Descriptive Statistics, and Public Choice Theory further broadened my analytical perspective, making the program both intellectually enriching and directly applicable to my career in sustainable development.
Scholarship Details
I was honored to receive the DAAD EPOS Scholarship (Development-Related Postgraduate Courses) in 2020, one of Germany’s most competitive and prestigious scholarships. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the DAAD EPOS program supports professionals from developing countries in gaining a Master’s or Doctoral degree in development-related fields.
This full scholarship covered tuition, living expenses, insurance, travel, and German language training. I was also fortunate to be selected for the DAAD Carlo-Schmid-Programme after obtaining my master degree, further enhancing my experience through a professional engagement as Research Analyst at UNRISD (United Nations Research Institute for Social Development) in Bonn, Germany.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor's degree in International Relations with an outstanding academic performance, graduating with a Grade of 94.17/100. This foundation played a pivotal role in my early career work with NGOs and international organizations, preparing me for a future in development cooperation. My undergraduate education aligned well with the interdisciplinary nature of the MA Sustainable Development Management program.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to German Universities?
I first learned about DAAD in 2015 through friends and DAAD alumni, and from that moment, I began to shape my academic and professional path toward eligibility. I researched relevant programs, built my work experience, and honed my academic record.
One key requirement was English proficiency. I took the IELTS, achieving a score above the required of 6.5. Alongside that, I strategically aligned my work experience to match the expectations of DAAD EPOS — particularly the need for two years of relevant professional experience in development sectors and a demonstrable commitment to development goals.
